Youth Unemployment in Romania: Post-crisis Challenges

Abstract This article reviews the dynamics of the Romanian youth labour market between 2007 and 2013. Using total unemployment rate as benchmarking we describe the dynamics of youth unemployment during these years. We argue that the short time effects of the crisis on youth unemployment are just one side of the problem. The long term effects related to education and migration trends are the main challenges that labour market policies should address in the near future.

Abstract For many years, globalization was at the main source of economic growth for the world economy. During and after the 2009 crisis many questions about the positive effects of globalization have arisen. The sharing economy is growing 20 times faster than was predicted. Travel, transportation, finance, are just few examples of sectors involved in collaborative economy. Labor market and employment have to face the challenges of sharing economy and for many years from now we will have to deal with the impact of this new trends. Innovative business models like Uber and AirBnb will change the landscape of job creation and will determine a demand for new skills.

Effects of Raising Minimum Wage: Theory, Evidence and Future Challenges

Abstract Minimum wage is one of the most studied topics in economics. This paper examines some of the most important issues related to the effects of raising minimum wage, based on new contributions in theoretical and empirical research, roughly since 2008. Our purpose was to find in the literature an explanation for the recent raise of minimum wage, in some European Union countries and United States and to identify possible effects of this evolution. Most of the studies point little or no employment response to modest increases in the minimum wage, but we argue there are some other effects to consider.

IMF lending arrangements in emerging and developing countries – participation and prediction

AbstractThe literature on determinants of International Monetary Fund (IMF) interventions in emerging and developing countries shows that the IMF’s decisions are determined by political and economic causes. This article empirically investigates economic factors, showing that a country’s probability to sign an IMF arrangement can be predicted by looking at a core group of macroeconomic variables. Using discriminant analysis we develop a score function that allows us to predict a country’s future participation in IMF programmes. This paper examines the dynamics of sector concentration in Romania starting from two basic questions: how concentrated the economic activities are and what factors determine the economic concentration. The lack of availability of concentration ratio series for Romanian economy has limited the research in this field. The paper reports the concentration ratios dynamics in Romania during the period 1996–2004, looking at the differences between industries and offers some possible explanations.
