Since some decades a renewed attention to the Mediterranean area in the seventeenth century has allowed a more concrete analysis of the political and military dynamics that involved the Iberian and Italian kingdoms in the years of Philip III and Philip IV. Overcoming the idea that the "great history" had left the Mare Nostrum to affect exclusively the Atlantic front, the role of the kingdoms of the Habsburg monarchy was redefined, with the use of human and material resources, in the management of the international policy. Since the end of the nineteenth century, the attention of Italian historiography to the Spanish monarchy in the modern age has been a constant in political, social and economic studies. Since the sixteenth century, the threat of Ottoman armies and Barbary corsairs forced Spain to gradually equip and upgrade a fleet of galleys - organized in teams - which in the "Italian" geopolitical space was headed by the domains that had a maritime projection (Kingdoms of Naples, Sicily, Sardinia) and the "connected" port of Genoa.
