Los Reinos Mediterraneos y la defensa de la Monarquia de Felipe III

Since some decades a renewed attention to the Mediterranean area in the seventeenth century has allowed a more concrete analysis of the political and military dynamics that involved the Iberian and Italian kingdoms in the years of Philip III and Philip IV. Overcoming the idea that the "great history" had left the Mare Nostrum to affect exclusively the Atlantic front, the role of the kingdoms of the Habsburg monarchy was redefined, with the use of human and material resources, in the management of the international policy. Thus, the geostrategic function covered by each territory in the new type of conflict was highlighted: the kingdom of Granada, like that of Sicily or Naples, were involved…

Control Over Administration, Repression of Corruption and Practices of Negotiation in the Spanish Monarchy. The Process of Residencia at the 10th Count of Lemos, Viceroy of Peru (1667-1672)

The debate around the definition of the political nature of the Spanish Monarchy in the modern age has widened its scope in recent years to include not only reflections on the relationships between the Court and the diverse territorial elements that made itup but also the various forms that “remote government” took from at various times. The success of a polycentric model, and the awareness of the parts played by a wide range of actors, communities and institutions at local level and in the broader international environment, have brought up some key questions with reference to the pivotal role of the transition from a theoretical model of administration, management and control to its practi…

Between post-colonial and global studies: mobility, government and coexistence in the territories of the Spanish Monarchy in the modern age

After overcoming a predominantly Eurocentric vision, historiography of the late 20th century ventured further into considering the development of dynamics on a planetary scale, embracing the innovative instances and methodological suggestions of Post-Colonial studies, as well as those of World and Global Studies. Whether one accepts the paradigm of “globalisation” or rejects it, like for example, among others, Frederick Cooper – who considers it an empty conceptual shell, devoid of uniformity – it is a matter of fact that social sciences, and history among them, were influenced by it in their heuristic approach at understanding phenomena. In this perspective, and within a dialectic approach…

La storiografia italiana e la proiezione atlantica della Monarchia Spagnola. Alcune riflessioni

Since the end of the nineteenth century, the attention of Italian historiography to the Spanish monarchy in the modern age has been a constant in political, social and economic studies. However, until the end of the last century, the attention to the ‘Atlantic dimension’ of the Monarchy was an expression of the interest of individual scholars within a panorama strongly characterized by research on the Mediterranean and European context. The passage from the 20th to the 21st century, instead, has witnessed the affirmation of new historiographical paths that adopted as an indispensable assumption the awareness of the impossibility of studying the Spanish monarchy if not in its imperial dimens…

Le flotte degli Austrias e gli scali italiani: una messa a punto

Since the sixteenth century, the threat of Ottoman armies and Barbary corsairs forced Spain to gradually equip and upgrade a fleet of galleys - organized in teams - which in the "Italian" geopolitical space was headed by the domains that had a maritime projection (Kingdoms of Naples, Sicily, Sardinia) and the "connected" port of Genoa. Furthermore, new territories (the State of the Presidi, the feudal enclave of Finale) were acquired to facilitate navigation within the western Mediterranean borders and the use of Ligurian ports was negotiated with the Republic of Genoa. The maritime war in its various forms was therefore at the base of an elaborate logistic and strategic organization, which…

Hombres y espacios. Circulación en la monarquía de España en la primera edad moderna

Since the last decades of the last century, studies on the Spanish monarchy have been enriched by new reflections and interest in the political and social dynamics that until then had been neglected, and thanks to the overcoming of historiographic paradigms linked to national realities. This new approach, which is linked to a dual perspective of local and international dimension, has given great importance to what is considered one of the aspects that characterized the Spanish Monarchy of the modern age: circulation, mobility and the transfer of knowledge. Despite the complex territorial articulation and wide geographical distances, the multiple "spaces" that attended the composition of the…
