The study of rural burgs founded during the totalitarian regimes in Spain and Italy, proposes a comparative study of urban realities characterised by peculiar elements, which show a design volition to decline the project on the territory on which it was intended to be realised, starting from an abstraction of the project up to the modifications dictated by social and logistical needs. In this paper, the case of the Spanish city Conquista del Guadiana from 1964, and the Italian Aprilia from 1936, will be deepened. Both of them are characterised by the tangential relationship with the main road axis of reference and connection with the neighbouring cities. This study aims to show that beyond …

Elaboration of a Critical Paradigm for Interpreting Modern Architecture: The Almost Intangible Essence of Luigi Moretti's Casa del Balilla at Trecate

Modern architecture is not, from a lexical point of view, uniquely definable. The heterogeneity of the twentieth century heritage is therefore a collective wealth that should be protected from the risk of falling into oblivion. In order to avoid this, it could prove fundamental to establish a process of the knowledge of these assets. This should not, however, result in a simple and passive recording of architectural facts: a deep understanding of the complexity of modern architecture, which has as its objective the protection of buildings, could be obtained, for example, through a real and proper decoding of signs, conducted by a critical use of the metalanguage most congenial to the archit…

In 16th century Sicily, in order to deal with the incursions of the Turks and Barbary, the Spanish viceroy government put in place the construction of some maritime forts in order to defend the coasts of the island. Among these, in the port city of Augusta, Avalos fort was built around 1570, a small modern fortification characterized by the particular semicircular floor plan, capable of having a wide radius of action. Various and extensive studies have been conducted on the events and historical representations of the fort also in relation to the fortified maritime system of the Sicilian coasts. However, these studies have not always been related to the actual state of the property, which, …

Can drawing be taken as an exploratory key to study a symbolic building of Italian Rationalism? This paper will attempt to do so on the Casa a ville sovrapposte in Via dell'Annunciata in Milan, designed by Figini and Pollini in the 1930s. This famous building could constitute the reversal of the established paradigm according to which rationalist buildings are always detached from the urban context of which they are part. The use of drawing as a cognitive tool can help us decode the complex of different instances underlying the design of this emblematic building of the early 20th century in Italy, including the designers’ intention to integrate nature into living, almost in an ante litteram…
