BeppoSAX observation of 4U 1907+09: Detection of a cyclotron line and its second harmonic

2000

Abstract We report the detection of a cyclotron absorption line and its second harmonic in the average spectrum of the high mass X-ray binary 4U1907+09 observed by the BeppoSAX satellite. The broad band spectral capability of BeppoSAX allowed a good determination of the continuum against which the two absorption features are evident at ∼ 19 and ∼ 39 keV. Correcting for the gravitational redshift of a ∼ 1.4 M⊙ neutron star, the inferred surface magnetic field strength is Bsurf = 2.1 × 1012 G.

BeppoSAX observation of the transient X-ray pulsar GS 1843+009

Abstract The transient X-ray pulsar GS 1843+009 was observed by BeppoSAX satellite on 1997 April 4, while it was at flux level of 50 mCrab in the 20–200 keV energy band. Using the MECS and LECS concentrators, the source position was measured with unprecedented accuracy of 30. In this poster we present results on both spectral and temporal analysis.

Multiple accelerated particle populations in the Cygnus Loop with Fermi-LAT

The Cygnus Loop (G74.0-8.5) is a very well-known nearby supernova remnant (SNR) in our Galaxy. Thanks to its large size, brightness, and angular offset from the Galactic plane, it has been studied in detail from radio to $\gamma$-ray emission. The $\gamma$ -rays probe the populations of energetic particles and their acceleration mechanisms at low shock speeds. We present an analysis of the $\gamma$-ray emission detected by the Large Area Telescope on board the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope over 11 years in the region of the Cygnus Loop. Different progenitors of short hard gamma-ray bursts

We consider the spatial offsets of short hard gamma-ray bursts (SHBs) from their host galaxies. We show that all SHBs with extended duration soft emission components lie very close to their hosts. We suggest that NS-BH binary mergers offer a natural explanation for the properties of this extended duration/low offset group. SHBs with large offsets have no observed extended emission components and are less likely to have an optically detected afterglow, properties consistent with NS-NS binary mergers occurring in low density environments.

GRB 050410 and GRB 050412: are they really dark gamma-ray bursts?

We present a detailed analysis of the prompt and afterglow emission of GRB 050410 and GRB 050412 detected by Swift for which no optical counterpart was observed. The 15-150 keV energy distribution of the GRB 050410 prompt emission shows a peak energy at 53 keV. The XRT light curve of this GRB decays as a power law with a slope of alpha=1.06+/-0.04. The spectrum is well reproduced by an absorbed power law with a spectral index Gamma_x=2.4+/-0.4 and a low energy absorption N_H=4(+3;-2)x10^21 cm^(-2) which is higher than the Galactic value. Software Timing Calibration of the ARGO-YBJ Detector

The ARGO-YBJ experiment is mainly devoted to search for astronomical gamma sources. The arrival direction of air showers is reconstructed thanks to the times measured by the pixels of the detector. Therefore, the timing calibration of the detector pixels is crucial in order to get the best angular resolution and pointing accuracy. Because of the large number of pixels a hardware timing calibration is practically impossible. Therefore an off-line software calibration has been adopted. Excitotoxin-induced changes in transglutaminase during differentiation of cerebellar granule cells

Excitotoxicity induced by NMDA receptor stimulation is able to increase the activity of many enzymes involved in neuronal cell death. Primary cultures of rat cerebellar granule cells were used to elucidate the role of transglutaminase reaction in the excitotoxic cell response, and to evaluate the role of glutamate receptors in cell survival and degeneration. Granule neurons, maintained in vitro for two weeks, were exposed to NMDA at different stages of differentiation. Following NMDA receptor activation, increases in transglutaminase activity were observed in cell cultures. The Status of the ARGO Experiment at YBJ

The ARGO-YBJ experiment, located at Yangbajing, Tibet, China, performed by a wide Sino-Italian collaboration, is designed to study cosmic rays, sub-TeV gamma ray sources and GeV Gamma Ray Burst (GRB) emission in the northern hemisphere, by means of detecting small size EAS (Extensive Air Shower) using a full coverage RPC (Resistive Plate Chamber) carpet. The central carpet of the detector is installed and put into operation to date, with 1900 m^2 of the carpet already operating since December 2004. There is a great deal of evidence that the X-ray emission from High Mass X-Ray Binaries (HMXRB) is often associated with the accretion of matter from a “normal” companion to a degenerate (neutron) star. In the last years the hard X-ray astronomy has made a significant step forward, thanks to the monitoring of the IBIS/ISGRI telescope on board the INTEGRAL satellite and of the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) on board of the Swift observatory. Scaler mode technique for the ARGO-YBJ detector

The ARGO-YBJ experiment has been designed to study the Extensive Air Showers with an energy threshold lower than that of the existing arrays by exploiting the high altitude location(4300 m a.s.l. in Tibet, P.R. China) and the full ground plane coverage. The lower energy limit of the detector (E $\sim$ 1 GeV) is reached by the scaler mode technique, i.e. recording the counting rate at fixed time intervals. GRB 050904 at redshift 6.3: observations of the oldest cosmic explosion after the Big Bang

We present optical and near-infrared observations of the afterglow of the gamma-ray burst GRB 050904. We derive a photometric redshift z = 6.3, estimated from the presence of the Lyman break falling between the I and J filters. This is by far the most distant GRB known to date. Its isotropic-equivalent energy is 3.4x10^53 erg in the rest-frame 110-1100 keV energy band. Despite the high redshift, both the prompt and the afterglow emission are not peculiar with respect to other GRBs. We find a break in the J-band light curve at t_b = 2.6 +- 1.0 d (observer frame). If we assume this is the jet break, we derive a beaming-corrected energy E_gamma = (4-12)x10^51 erg. This limit shows that GRB 050…

FIGARO IV: Large-area balloon-borne telescope to study rapid time variabilities in the gamma-ray sources at energies above 50 MeV

We present a new γ-ray telescope based on the Limited Streamer Tube technology, used as tracking chambers to detect photons above 100 MeV. This technique allows to obtain very large sensitive areas (16 m2 in our experiment), together with a good angular resolution for payloads embarcable in high-altitude balloon flights. The capability to collect a large signal in a short exposure time makes the telescope particularly suitable and competitive with respect to satellite-based detectors for studying both periodic and random time variabilities on galactic and extragalactic γ-ray sources.

Swift GRBs: The early afterglow spectral energy distribution

We present the first results of a program to systematically study the optical-to-X-ray spectral energy distribution (SED) of Swift GRB afterglows with known redshift. The goal is to study the properties of the GRB explosion and of the intervening absorbing material. In this report we present the preliminary analysis on 23 afterglows. Thanks to Swift, we could build the SED at early times after the GRB (minutes to hours). We derived the Hydrogen column densities and the spectral slopes from the X-ray spectrum. Exploration of the X-ray sky has established X-ray astronomy as a fundamental astrophysical discipline. While our knowledge of the sky below 10 keV has increased dramatically (∼8 orders of magnitude) by use of grazing incidence optics, we still await a similar improvement above 10 keV, where to date only collimated instruments have been used. Pile-up correction for the Swift-XRT observations in WT mode

The detector at the focal plane of the Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) supports four readout modes, automatically changed on board, to cover the dynamical range of fluxes and rapid variability expected from GRB afterglows. The Windowed Timing (WT) mode is used for sources with flux higher than a few mCrab and is obtained by compressing 10 rows into a single row, and then reading out only the central 200 columns of the CCD. Swift Observations of GRB 051109B

2007

We present Swift observations of GRB 051109B, a soft long burst triggered by the Burst Alert Telescope (BAT). The soft photon index of the prompt emission suggest it is a X-ray Flash (XRF) or, at least, a X-ray Rich (XRR) burst. The X-ray lightcurve displays the canonical shape of many other GRBs, a double b roken power law with a small flare superimposed at ~T_0+1500 s, and its extrapolation to early times smoothly joins with the BAT lightcurve. On the basis of the derived optical to X-ray flux ratio, it cannot be classified as a dark burst.

Heterogenous forms of dyslipidemiain women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Forms of dyslipidemia are very common in individuals affected by polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but in addition to plasmatic lipids, it is necessary to evaluate the alterations in the atherogenic lipoproteins (Lp) and apolipoproteins (apo). In our study we measured the concentrations of apoB, Lp(a) and low density lipoproteins (LDL) in 42 patients with PCOS (age: 28 +/- 7 years, body mass index: 27 +/- 5 kg/m-) and 37 healthy women (of the same age and body mass index). Methods: values of Lp(a) >30 mg/dl were considered high, whereas for apoB, values >100 g/l were considered high. The short GRB 051210 observed by Swift

We report on the short GRB051210 detected by the Swift-BAT. The light curve, on which we focus mainly, shows a hint of extended emission in the BAT energy range, a steep decay of the X-ray emission, without any flattening or break, and two small flares in the first 300 sec. The emission fades out after ~1000 s.

Attributes of flares in Gamma Ray Bursts: sample I

We discuss some of the preliminary results and findings derived from the analysis of a first sample of flares detected by the XRT on board Swift. The analysis shows that the morphology of flares is the one we expect from the collision of ultra-relativistic shells as it happens during the internal shock model proposed by Rees and Meszaros in 1994. Furthermore the Delta(t)/t ratio and the decay-time to rise-time ratio have mean values that are in good agreement with the values observed in the prompt emission pulses that are believed to originate from internal shocks.
