Why is genetic modification of interest or why can it be useful?
Abstract The genetic modification is a widely debated topic. Pros and cons are substantiated with scientific results or by biased interpretation of experimental results and potential hazards. Genetic modification is a naturally occurring phenomenon. Basic research type of application of genetic modification is teaching us important lessons about the implication of genes in every aspects of life. The applied research–related genetic modifications are offering unprecedented solutions to make plants, animals, and microorganisms bring more benefits, while their impact on environment and human health once they are released into field or get introduced into the food chain needs case-to-case asses…
Studies concerning the production of volatile oil, rhizomes and roots, to different genotypes of Valeriana officinalis L.
Valeriana officinalis L. is considered to pertain to European species, with great ecologic plasticity, which allows its adaptation to climate conditions characteristics to plain areas and also to mountain areas up to an altitude of 2400 meters. The species is a well-known curative plant, with a long history and multiple uses. Essential oils deriving from this species revealed the interest of researchers in food industry, cosmetics and officinal industry, furthermore being used as additives too.The raw material from which essential oils are being extracted is represented mainly by rhizomes and roots. This study has the purpose to emphasize the differences of essential oils production registe…
Drought Stress Study on Nicotiana tabacum L., “Baladi”, an In Vitro Experimental Model
Crops drought tolerance is a trait of outmost importance for agriculture especially today when climate change is affecting more the production for food and feed. The scope of this article is to evaluate in vitro drought stress response of Nicotiana tabacum L., “Baladi”. The experiment was set up for four successive stages starting with in vitro seedling development, hypocotyl cultivation, three generations of micropropagation, pre-acclimatization and acclimatization. The effect of abscisic acid (ABA) and/or polyethylene-glycol 6000 (PEG) on tobacco hypocotyl caulogenesis and micropropagation were investigated. Superoxide-dismutases (SODs) and peroxidases (POXs) are more active and different…
Economical Issues Regarding the Implementation and Functioning of the Common Catalogue of Varieties of Agricultural Plant Species
Abstract Economical constraints regarding the full implementation and functioning of the common catalogue on plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGEFA) are discussed in this paper based on the assessment of the current European Union regulatory framework. Based on this article's results new financial mechanisms should be developed at the national level for further responding to the European requirements including measures regarding the conservation varieties. This assessment is further supporting the need for developing and implementing new financial mechanisms in the support of the poor rural populations as well as for small farmers in harmony with commercial agriculture.
