Splenic Littoral Cell Hemangioendothelioma in a Patient With Crohn's Disease Previously Treated With Immunomodulators and Anti-TNF Agents: A Rare Tumor Linked to Deep Immunosuppression
Th e risk of malignancy in Crohn ’ s disease (CD) has been well described. Moreover, immunomodulators, uch as azathioprine (AZA) and 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), and biological agents, such as infl iximab and adalimumab, may promote carcinogenesis ( 1 – 3 ). Splenic littoral cell tumors are recently described tumors of vascular origin composed of endothelial cells, with typical microscopic and immunohistochemical features of splenic sinus lining cells ( 4 ). Clinical findings are not specific, and outcome is unpredictable but usually benign, although a few cases with a malignant behavior have been reported ( 5,6 ). We report a 58-year-old Caucasian man with a long history of ileocolonic CD.
Increased expression of markers of early atherosclerosis in patients with inflammatory bowel disease.
Recent studies documented an increased cardiovascular risk in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our study aimed at investigating the prevalence of intima-media thickness (IMT) of the carotid arteries and the arterial stiffness indices as markers of early atherosclerosis in young IBD patients.We recruited 68 consecutive IBD patients, and 38 matched healthy controls less than 45years old (median age 31.6±8.1years). Evidence on each drug is introduced by the related statement of ECCO guidelines. Genetic predisposition to thrombophilia in inflammatory bowel disease
BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is linked to a definite risk of thromboembolic events (TE), but data on the role of prothrombotic genetic mutations are conflicting. STUDY Fourteen genetic factors involved in TE pathogenesis were investigated in a homogeneous cohort of Sicilian patients with IBD with and without history of TE and in healthy controls. Forty IBD patients (21 CD, 19 UC) and 20 healthy individuals were enrolled.
