Public Health physicians and empathy: are we really emphatic? The Jefferson Scale applied to Italian resident doctors in Public Health.

2013

Large gaps in care quality resulting from ineffective communication between health providers, patients, and other health care organizations have been documented. Research suggests that effective, empathic communication positively influences health outcomes. Many studies focused on the assessment of clinicians empathy, while there is still a lack of evidence on the role and level of empathy for public health medical doctors, especially during their postgraduate education. The aim of this study was to assess empathy level of public health residents, and to investigate differences in empathy scores using a validated questionnaire. The Italian version of the Jefferson scale of Physician Empathy …

Re-irradiation With Carbon Ion Radiotherapy for Pelvic Rectal Cancer Recurrences in Patients Previously Irradiated to the Pelvis

2020

Background/Aim: Re-irradiation of locally recurrent rectal cancer poses challenges due to the proximity of critical organs, such as the bowel. This study aimed at evaluating the safety and efficacy of re-irradiation with Carbon Ion Radiotherapy (CIRT) in rectal cancer patients with local recurrence. Patients and Methods: Between 2014 and 2018, 14 patients were treated at the National Center of Oncological Hadrontherapy (CNAO Foundation) with CIRT for locally recurrent rectal cancer. Results: All patients concluded the treatment. No G≥3 acute/late reaction nor pelvic infections were observed. The 1-year and 2-year local control rates were, 78% and 52%, respectively, and relapse occurred clos…

Rare-earth doped silica optical fibres for ionizing radiation detection

2016

Scintillating silica optical fibre sensors have shown interesting results for ionizing radiation monitoring and therefore can be useful for dosimetry applications in medical field. In fact, they enable a remote, punctual and real-time dose assessment (Mones et al., 2008). In addition, the high radiation hardness that characterizes silica optical fibers, makes these systems promising for radiation detection in high energy physics experiments (Chiodini et al., 2014). This work aims to review the recent progresses in the development and characterization of rare-earth doped silica fibres. The radioluminescent and dosimetric properties of Ce, Eu, Yb and Pr-doped silica matrices are described and…
