Introduction: In spite of a low incidence of complications during thyroidectomy, there is a widespread tendency to extend hospitalization at least until postoperative second day. The need of a rebalancing between costs and profits had led us to revise the hospitalization’s duration. Methods: We reviewed our early experience (129 patients candidated to total thyroidectomy as ordinary hospitalization from 2001 to 2002) identifying the causes of hospitalization’s delay both preoperatively and in discharge. Defective apoptosis as potential mechanism in the tumorogenesis of myelolipoma
Apoptosis is considered an important mechanism of selective deletion that occurs during hematopoiesis. Myelolipoma is a rare benign tumor composed of adipose tissue and hematopoietic cells. The pathogenesis of this benign tumor is still unclear. Analysing the structural levels and apoptosis of normal human bone marrow (NHBM) and human myelolipoma (HM), the apoptotic events resulted abundantly present in NHBM compared to HM, which showed a small number of apoptotic cells. By contrast, Fas expression was strongly present both in NHBM and HM. These findings suggest that an altered function of Fas in myelolipoma is not able to trigger the apoptotic machinery. Seasonality of sheep milk freezing point and relationship with other chemical and physical milk parameters
Milk freezing point (FP) is an important quality indicator which can be used for determination of possible adulteration of the milk with water. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of seasonality on ewe FP produced in Sicily during the last 10 years of investigation. A total of 1,996 samples of raw bulk ewes’ milk were collected from 295 dairy factories located in western Sicily (Italy). The average of the FP during the entire period of investigations was -0.560 °C ± 0.013 °C. The seasonality of milk FP showed that at the beginning of lactations (September) the FP was -0.554°C, than it decreased up to December (-0.561°C). Sheep habit during hand milking, and relations between the incorrect hand milking procedure and mammary health
This study aimed: (1) to evaluate the relation between the incorrect hand milking and mammary health; (2) to test the hypothesis of the ewe habit in the workstation, of their choice, during the milking. Teat moisturization with foam milk collected from the milk tank represents a high-risk factor because potentially contain mastitis-causing bacteria previously released from affected ewes. Moreover, it was found that sheep are routinary animals by habit during hand milking.
