The present volume aims to examine the relationship between some models of articulation of the system of art theory and the methodological reflection on the history of aesthetics in 20th-cen- tury Germany. Starting from Erwin Panofsky, this volume analyz- es various aspects of the debate of the 1920s and 1930s (the de- velopment of neo-Kantian methodology, historical phenomenolo- gy, and the beginning of the “history of ideas”), up to the great crisis caused by the rise of Nazism. The poem Nach der Natur by W. G. Sebald, real germinal place of its author’s subsequent literary production, is a salient moment of confrontation for today's philosophical gaze; our historical time and our own humanity are configured as “natural history” (Benjamin), in a compositional game in which the present time acquires the character of a timeless distance projecting it on the background of a mournful nature, entrusting to the roughness of the poetic material and to its conceptual weaving the task of an unprecedented presentification of some layers of reality of rare density.

According to Ugo Volli, «what defines the identity of any semiotic object is its ability to carry out a specific set of functions». But what happens if the semiotic object does not achieve these functions? If the semiotic object does not keep its promises? What is the relation that connects the presence of a semiotic object with its ‘natural task’? Thus, what happens for example to the food if it cannot be enjoyed, if it does not feed?
