The Impact of Big Data, Sustainability, and Digitalization on Company Performance

Abstract Nowadays companies are dealing with large amounts of data, not only for an important decision but also into their day-to-day activity. In order to handle properly these large volumes of data, from different sources without missing the opportunities, companies need to figure out how to manage big data to their advantage. Embracing the advantages of big data is not enough because in order to face the challenges of the business environment, investing in digital technology is no longer seen as giving a competitive advantage, is seen as a standard. Also in the path of evolution, the interest of companies (profit) on one side and the interests of society (social and environmental) on the…

Short-Termism: A Step Forward Toward Long-Term Performance or a Dead End

The debate around short-termism and its effects on the economic life, rather negative than positive, is far from ending, having academics, practitioners, and pundits arguing on this topic. The purpose of this paper is to determine if short-termism is part of the process of creating long-term performance (value) in an organization or it is harmful for harnessing performance, by presenting the definitions of the concept, who are the main promoters of short-termism, opinions of both academics and practitioners, and studies and examples that sustain on the one side the fact that short-termism encourages the manipulation of numbers in order to meet quarterly earnings, by cutting investments from…

Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM) of Stock Indexes and Financial Market Uncertainty in the Context of Non-Crisis and Financial Crisis Scenarios

The present article proposes a methodology for modeling the evolution of stock market indexes for 2020 using geometric Brownian motion (GBM), but in which drift and diffusion are determined considering two states of economic conjunctures (states of the economy), i.e., non-crisis and financial crisis. Based on this approach, we have found that the GBM proved to be a suitable model for making forecasts of stock market index values, as it describes quite well their future evolution. However, the model proposed by us, modified geometric Brownian motion (mGBM), brings some contributions that better describe the future evolution of stock indexes. Evidence in this regard was provided by analyzing …

The Influence of Intangible Assets in the Company Performance: The Case of the World’s Most Profitable Corporations

Intangible assets are no longer a competitive advantage, but a must if a company wants to create value for the long-term and maintain performance at a high level compared with its peers. Due to the various factors that contribute to the performance of a company, there are a plethora of methods to measure the impact of each one. This paper’s objective is to measure the performance of the company, with a focus on the contribution of the intangible assets. To fulfil this objective, financial ratios will be used, and a method (‘Calculated Intangible Value’) to quantify the impact of intangible assets. By applying a multiple discriminant analysis, two functions will result, a general one, and an…

Performance Management Systems – Proposing and Testing a Conceptual Model

Abstract The utility of performance measurement and management system can be said to have been proven, but the problem faced by both the theoreticians and practitioners is to set the right performance indicators. Developed models are tools that managers can use to measure and manage performance, but they need to be tailored to the context. Also, the trend towards using non-financial performance indicators makes it very difficult for managers to design a performance measurement and management system because it involves the integration of qualitative and non-quantitative variables and a profound understanding of the internal and external environment of the company.

Knowledge Mapping of Optimal Taxation Studies: A Bibliometric Analysis and Network Visualization

The problem of tax policy design has been an important concern over the years, involving comprehensive scientific research. In this study, our major goal was to examine and map the optimal taxation research thematic structure by using bibliometric analysis. The analysis was carried out with the CiteSpace software on publications indexed by Web of Science (WoS) between 1975 and 2021. This document offers an actual bibliometric analysis of the current research climate in terms of optimal taxation, based on the following aspects: (1) descriptive characteristics of publication outputs (distribution by years, authors, countries, journals); (2) collaboration analysis of authors, institutions, and…
