Haemophagocytic syndrome (HS) is a rare disease that is often fatal despite treatment. HS is characterized by fevers, lymphadenopathy, hepatosplenomegaly, cytopenias and hyperferritinaemia due to deregulated activation and proliferation of macrophages, leading to uncontrolled phagocytosis of platelets, erythrocytes, lymphocytes, and their hematopoietic precursors throughout the reticuloendothelial system. BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a chronic illness with great impact on long-term outcome after liver transplantation (LT). Despite this, the current level of glycemic control and quality of screening strategies for diabetes-associated conditions that are being provided to liver transplant recipients with diabetes have not yet been assessed.
