Short-term impact of prescribed fire on soil pH, organic matter and hydrophobicity in a Calluna vulgaris heathland located in Lithuania. First results
The aim of this work is study the short-term effects of a prescribed fire used for landscape management on soil pH, organic matter (SOM) and soil water repellency in different size fractions (2-1, 1-0.5, 0.5-0.25 and <0.25 mm) in a Calluna vulgaris heathland (After the fire and 4 months after the fire). We selected two different plots affected by different fire severities in order to observe if different prescribed fire severities could have different impacts on the studied soil properties (The severity in plot I was higher than in the plot II). The results showed that independently of the severity, the prescribed fire did not have in the period immediately after the fire did not changed si…
Spatial Gradients of Intensity and Persistence of Soil Water Repellency Under Different Forest Types in Central Mexico
Organic residues release hydrophobic compounds to the soil that may induce soil water repellency (WR), which may inhibit infiltration andincrease runoff and soil loss rates. Although there are many studies on soil WR through the world, very few investigations have been con-ducted in Mexican areas. This paper studies the natural background of soil WR in soils from central Mexico under representative forest types, analyzing the spatial distribution of soil WR in relation with tree canopy, vegetation cover and main soil chemical (pH, CaCO3, organic Ccontent and exchangeable cations) and physical properties (texture). The water drop penetration time and the ethanol tests were used to assesspersis…
Do stones modify the spatial distribution of fire induced soil water repellency? Preliminary data
Water repellency is a property of many fire-affected soils that contributes to delayed wetting rates and shows many hydrological and geomorphological consequences. Fire-induced soil water repellency (SWR) may be modulated by pre-fire soil and vegetation properties. Many studies have been carried out to investigate the relationship between SWR and these properties. But, to our knowledge, no studies have considered the effect of surface stones in the spatial distribution of fire-induced SWR. In this research, we study the occurrence and spatial and vertical distribution of SWR and its consequences on soil structure after experimental burning in a previously wettable soil under different stone…
Do fire severity effects on soil change in space and time in the short-term? What ash tells us
n the absence of data, the impact of fire, especially wildfires, is measured analysing the fire severity. This post-fire assessment is very useful because allow to identify the degree of destruction imposed by the fire. Among the techniques used to determine fire severity, ash colour is often used, that permit identify the degree of organic matter consumption (darker ash uncompleted combustion, lighter ash completed combustion). The objective of this paper was observed if fire severity changes in space and time, according to ash colour analysis, applying an index. The ash colour analysis was carried out one and fifteen days after the fire. In this area we identified ash with four different …

Modelling soil organic carbon stocks in global change scenarios: a CarboSOIL application
Global climate change, as a consequence of the increasing levels of atmospheric CO2 concentration, may significantly affect both soil organic C storage and soil capacity for C sequestration. CarboSOIL is an empirical model based on regression techniques and developed as a geographical information system tool to predict soil organic carbon (SOC) contents at different depths. This model is a new component of the agro-ecological decision support system for land evaluation MicroLEIS, which assists decision-makers in facing specific agro-ecological problems, particularly in Mediterranean regions. In this study, the CarboSOIL model was used to study the effects of climate change on SOC dynamics i…
