Communication et médiation par le toucherdans quelques expositions de sciences : Limites et contraintes dans l’expérience des visiteurs

2016

This communication deals with the “general public” of visitors to a number of interactive exhibits that accord a direct or indirect role to the sense of touch in knowledge mediation and interpretation. The role of touch is discussed in terms of its limitations and constraints in communication situations. The social mobilizations of touch are not immediately evident; what are the conditions under which visitors actually use touch in experiencing an exhibit? What connections with other signifiers are the most conducive to reception? This qualitative research relies on observation and interviews. Apprehension of interactive objects appears to be dependent on the surrounding setting of sociabil…

The place of art works in an exhibition on radiation protection

2015

The travelling exhibition “Vous avez dit radioprotection?” is coproduced by a science centre, (le Pavillon des Sciences), a scientific institution, the Radioprotection and Nuclear Safety Institute (IRSN), and the Pays de Montbéliard Agglomération regional authority. It gives an historic perspective on the discovery of radioactivity, and on radiation protection from two main devices: didactic films and artistic creations. Within the framework of a doctorate research in Communication Sciences at the University of Burgundy, France, this case study explores two points of view, the first being the exhibition as a mediating device, and the challenges related to it; the second is related to how th…

Scientific communication in museums through presential mediation : Case study le Pavillon des Sciences

2014

In science museums and science centers, "presential" mediation positioning a mediator and the public in the co-presence of objects within a dedicated environment, remains relatively unknown. From a Communication Science perspective, analyzing actual situations transcends the simple provision of information, and focuses on the significance of third party forms within the construction of meaning. Presential communication is transient and centered on the words and gestures of an embodied third party. It provides a greater potential for interactions around practical situations, unlike other media (i.e. an exhibition). The purpose of this research is to question the rightful place of these speci…

Memories of video gaming culture on YouTube

2016

Within the patrimonialization of video gaming, the status of memory representations is still unknown. On YouTube, amateur video makers present games from the 1970s through to the 1990s, combining voice and screencast. By reviewing these low audience channels and interviewing their creators, we have tried to understand the current trends in amateur videos. The ensuing results highlight the diversity of the relationship to memory. Productions are supported by a seminal viewer practice (Web, TV), and a diversified frame: recreational computing, conservation, web archives, emulation. The momentum provided by this nostalgia interfaces with a critical discourse; Becoming a video maker generates a…
