Hemodynamic and ventilatory changes in pediatric patients with special needs: A comparative clinical study
Very limited data are available on the hemodynamic and ventilatory changes during sedation and general anesthesia using bispectral index (BIS) monitoring in intellectually disabled children. The purpose was to determine the hemodynamic and ventilatory changes after propofol and sevoflurane administration in children with special needs (CSN) versus healthy children (HC) during dental treatment.Forty pediatric patients needing dental treatment were allocated into two groups: children without systemic disease (healthy children [HC]) and mentally disabled children (children with special needs [CSN]). Sevoflurane in oxygen (100% oxygen, 5 l/min) and continuous propofol infusion (target-controlle…
Comparison of pain and swelling after removal of oral leukoplakia with CO2 laser and cold knife: a randomized clinical trial
Objective: The aim of this study was to compare conventional surgery with carbon dioxide (CO2) laser in patients with oral leukoplakia, and to evaluate the postoperative pain and swelling. Study design: A total of 48 patients (27 males and 21 females) with a mean age of 53.7 ± 11.7 years and diagnosed with oral leukoplakia were randomly assigned to receive treatment either with conventional surgery using a cold knife or with a CO2 laser technique. A visual analog scale (VAS) was used to score pain and swelling at different postoperative time points. Results: Pain and swelling reported by the patients was greater with the conventional cold knife than with the CO2 laser, statistically signifi…
Analysis of the histopathological artifacts in punch biopsies of the normal oral mucosa
Objectives: To study the most frequent artifacts of punch biopsies of the healthy oral mucosa, distinguishing between those attributable to the surgical technique and those resulting from sample processing in the laboratory. Study design: A total of 186 samples of oral mucosa (dorsal lingual mucosa) were obtained from 186 adult albino rats by the experienced oral surgeons, evaluating the presence of artifacts attributable to the surgical technique (crush, splits, fragmentation, pseudocysts and haemorrhage) and those attributable to sample processing in the laboratory (orientation). Results: The distribution of artifacts attributable to the surgical procedure was as follows: crush 16.67%, sp…

Attitude towards oral biopsy among general dentists in Murcia
Objective: The present study explores the attitude of general dentists towards oral biopsy as a diagnostic method in application to oral lesions. Material and methods: A questionnaire was administered by mail to 520 general dentists in the Autonomous Community of Murcia (Spain), addressing a number of items: sociodemographic parameters, years of professional experience, the diagnosis of mucosal lesions, the performance of oral biopsies, and their histopathological evaluation. Results: The global response rate was 32.7% (55.9% for males and 43.5% for females), with a global mean age of 35.9 years. Of note is the fact that the group with least professional experience did not include oral biop…
