Learner identity in EFL: An analysis of digital texts of identity in higher education

2018

This study explores learner identity (LI) in digital texts of identity (DTI) produced by college learners in English as a foreign language (EFL). In so doing, it aims to shed light on learners’ connections of their learning experiences across time and settings, and their impact on the various learner identities that form their LI. It also intends to elucidate how learners construct powerful learner identities in and through their digital discourses. To this end, 51 DTI were collected and scrutinized, following studies on LI, critical and poststructuralist discourse analysis, and “thematic” and “dialogic/performative” analysis within narrative research. Learners established connections betwe…

A Socio-Cognitive Approach To Political Interaction: An Analysis of Candidates Discourses in U.S. Political Campaign Debates.

2006

The present research focuses on politeness in candidates discourses in U.S. political campaign debates of the 2000 elections from a socio-cognitive approach to social interaction. This approach entails an eclectic perspective on communication that intends to account for its cognitive, linguistic, relational and socio-cultural aspects in a determinate communicative encounter. This eclectic perspective is based on Brown and Levinsons (1987) Politeness Theory on the one hand, and Sperber and Wilsons Relevance Theory (1986/1995) on the other hand, with the latter constituting a cognitive complement to the former on theoretical grounds. From this eclectic approach, politeness has been conceived …

El relato digital como herramiento pedagógica en la enseñanza de lenguas extranjeras a través del uso de la secuencia didáctica

2012

Digital storytelling constitutes a pedagogical tool for teachers to work on different linguistic skills while generating students’ interest and attention. This study analyses the usefulness of including digital storytelling within a didactic sequence in order to work on linguistic routines such as greetings and leave-takings in English as a foreign language. To this aim, we have worked with first year students in the Faculty of Education at the Universitat de València to improve their ability to adapt their language skills to specific situations within common daily interaction. We have designed a didactic sequence consisting of different workshops that have been put into practice in class. …

Textos de Identidad Multimodales en el Aula de Inglés como Lengua Extranjera: Una Herramienta para Desarrollo de Habilidades Cognitivas y Académicas …

2016

[EN] The present action-research project in progress deals with the production and evaluation of “identity texts” (Cummins & Early, 2011) from EFL students in the context of a specific subject within the major of English Teacher in Primary Education at the Faculty of Education of the Universitat de València. This project is part of a larger “Innovation in education” project, whose main objective is to promote the use of identity texts as the key strategy of the “teaching for linguistic transfer” approach (Cummins, 2005b). Identity texts foster learners’ cognitive and academic transfer from their first language (L1) to their second or foreign language (L2/FL), and offer students an opportuni…
