Historic gardens are important parts of humanity’s built heritage within the designed landscape, providing many environmental, economic and socio-cultural benefits. The contribution of geographical certification programs to farm income and rural economies: The case of Pecorino Siciliano PDO

This study attempts to measure the capacity of the EU geographical certification scheme to positively influence the price of certified products and the incomes of their producers. A comparison of the economic results of two cheese-producing dairy farm enterprises with different business strategies and locations within the Sicilian hinterlands is performed in order to determine the transformation value of each dairy’s sheep milk into pecorino cheese (with and without the Protected Designation of Origin, or PDO, certification) and the related joint products (ricotta). This essay looks at how garden grottos a in Europe have been defined and classified through the centuries to understand how they reveal the changing relationship between man and “other”. Made from ephemeral material and subject to high levels of humidity, grottos are particularly vulnerable cultural artefacts. Despite having a rich history of ornamental grottos, up until now little attention has been paid to the grottos of Sicily. Thus, an initial list of eight specifically Sicilian grotto types is offered, in the hopes of inspiring interest in their history and conservation.
