Due to a unique pattern of CD8 T-cell response induced by cytomegaloviruses (CMVs), live attenuated CMVs are attractive candidates for vaccine vectors for a number of clinically relevant infections and tumors. Background & Aims: In hepatitis, hepatocytes gain the ability to express major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II molecules and to present antigen to CD4 T cells. Here, we investigated whether MHC class II-expressing hepatocytes influence in vitro the differentiation of CD4 T cells and in vivo the T-cell response to and control of viral infection. The marriage between immunology and cytometry is one of the most stable and productive in the recent history of science. A rapid search in PubMed shows that, as of July 2017, using “flow cytometry immunology” as a search term yields more than 68 000 articles, the first of which, interestingly, is not about lymphocytes.
