Partial least squares X-ray fluorescence determination of trace elements in sediments from the estuary of Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River.

2010

The feasibility of partial least squares (PLS) regression modeling of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectra of estuarine sediments has been evaluated as a tool for rapid trace element content monitoring. Multivariate PLS calibration models were developed to predict the concentration of Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, V and Zn in sediments collected from different locations across the estuary of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River (Metropolitan Bilbao, Bay of Biscay, Basque Country). The study was carried out on a set of 116 sediment samples, previously lyophilized and sieved with a particle size lower than 63 microm. Sample reference data were obtained by inductively coupled plasma mass …

Spectroscopic analysis used to uncover the original paint colour of the Helsinki Government Palace tower clock faces

2016

The paint stratigraphy of the two clock faces from the tower clock of the Government Palace in Helsinki (Finland) was analysed in order to determine their original colour before restoration works. Paint cross-section samples from both clock faces were analysed by confocal Raman microscopy and scanning electron microscopy coupled to an energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM-EDS). The results revealed the complex superimposition of paint layers applied over the original black colour. FTIR/ATR analyses proved that the original paint was prepared with linseed oil-resin media. Most likely not all of the different layer colours were visible. Some of the layers were likely to have been a primer…

Use of reflectance infrared spectroscopy for monitoring the metal content of the estuarine sediments of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River (Metropolitan Bil…

2009

Multivariate partial least-squares (PLS) calibration models have been developed for the spatial and seasonal simultaneous monitoring of 14 trace elements (Al, As, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sn, V, and Zn) in sediments from 117 samples taken in the estuary of the Nerbioi-Ibaizabal River. Models were based on the chemometric treatment of diffuse reflectance near-infrared (NIR) and attenuated total reflectance (ATR) mid infrared (MIR) spectra, obtained from samples previously lyophilized and sieved with a particle size lower than 63 microm. Vibrational spectra were scanned in both, NIR and MIR regions. Developed PLS models, based on the interaction between trace elements and organic m…

In situ analysis with portable Raman and ED-XRF spectrometers for the diagnosis of the formation of efflorescence on walls and wall paintings of the …

2014

This work presents the results of field Raman analyses, assisted by a hand-held energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer, for the experimental determination of efflorescence from walls and wall paintings of two Pompeian houses, one with many luxurious decorative elements (House of Marcus Lucretius, Regio IX, Insula 3, House 5/24) and a more modest building (Regio IX, Insula 3, House 1-2). Both exposed and protected rooms were measured in different year seasons, spring (May 2010) and summer (September 2011 and 2012) and considering different orientations. Chemical attacks of acid gases (CO2, SO2 and NOx) on the original compounds of the mortars, biominerals formed by the biological …
