A species distribution study in relation to the sea distance is realized in a portion of the sandy strip from "Cabo de Gata" (Almeria, Spain). The sea distance…

Phylogenetics of Anthyllis (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae: Loteae): Partial incongruence between nuclear and plastid markers, a long branch problem and implications for morphological evolution.

Abstract Phylogenetic relationships in the genus Anthyllis (Leguminosae: Papilionoideae: Loteae) were investigated using data from the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer regions (ITS) and three plastid regions (psbA–trnH intergenic spacer, petB–petD region and rps16 intron). Bayesian and maximum parsimony (MP) analysis of a concatenated plastid dataset recovered well-resolved trees that are topologically similar, with many clades supported by unique indels. MP and Bayesian analyses of the ITS sequence data recovered trees that have several well-supported topological differences, both among analyses, and to trees inferred from the plastid data. The most substantial of these concer…

Allium moly subsp. glaucescens (Asparagaceae), a new subspecies from the Iberian Peninsula

Allium moly subsp. glaucescens is described as a new subspecies from the Iberian Peninsula. Different morphological characters from populations located in Valencia (Spain) are evidenced. Lower size of plants, smaller and narrower leaves, of noticeably bluish-green color (glaucous-pruinose), smaller and less flowers in the umbel-inflorescence are characteristic of the new subspecies. Ecology, habitat, cultivation and chemotaxonomy have also been considered and discussed in this work.

Taxonomic complexity in the halophyte Limonium vulgare and related taxa (Plumbaginaceae): insights from analysis of morphological, reproductive and karyological data

Part of a special issue on halophytes and saline adaptations Background and Aims Limonium is awell-known example of a group of plants that is taxonomically complex due to certain biological characteristics that hamper species’ delineation. The closely related polyploid species Limonium vulgare Mill., L. humile Mill. and L. narbonense Mill. are defined species and can be used for studying patterns of morphological and reproductive variation. The first two taxa are usually found in Atlantic Europe and the third in the Mediterranean region, but a numberof intermediate morphological formsmay be present alongside typical examples of these species. This study attempts to elucidate morphological, …

Genetic variability of Chamaerops humilis (Arecaceae) throughout its native range highlights two species movement pathways from its area of origin

AbstractThe European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis, Arecaceae) is the only native palm in continental Europe, providing ecosystem services that are hard to obtain from other species. However, its populations are declining in some areas due to anthropogenic effects including climate change. Knowledge of genetic variability among natural populations is needed to establish conservation plans, to prevent genetic contamination of native stands by cultivated germplasm and to exploit it as an ornamental species. However, information on the genetic similarities among C. humilis populations is scarce. The aims of this work were to study genetic structure in C. humilis using a set of specifically desi…
