Critical behaviour of coupled spin chains

The authors investigate, using numerical computation of the eigenvalues of short chains, the critical behaviour of two composite spin models, which interpolate smoothly between isotropic Heisenberg chains with different values of S. For the first model which interpolates between S=1/2 and S=3/2 they find that the model is critical over the whole range and the values of the central charge and critical exponents (scaling dimensions) appear to be constant in the thermodynamic limit. In the second model, which interpolates between S=1/2 and S=1 they find that, except at S=1/2, the central charge is effectively zero, implying a non-critical behaviour.

Small clusters with Heisenberg antiferromagnetic exchange

We study small symmetrical clusters of magnetic ions with Heisenberg antiferromagnetic exchange interaction. We calculate the magnetization and the specific heat as functions of applied magnetic field at zero and non-zero temperature. Results are given for both classical and quantum systems. At zero temperature the classical systems undergo a series of transitions where the symmetry changes as a function of applied field. The quantum systems show similar features to Ising systems previously studied.

Three-dimensional analysis of tumour vascular corrosion casts using stereoimaging and micro-computed tomography

Objective: In order to perform effective translational research for cancer therapy, we need to employ preclinical models which reflect the clinical situation. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively compare the vascular architecture of human colorectal cancer and experimental tumour models to determine the suitability of animal models for vascular studies and antivascular therapy. Methods: In this study we investigated the three-dimensional properties of colonic tumour vasculature in both human clinical tissues (normal mucosa control [n = 20], carcinoma [n = 20] and adenoma In = 61) and murine colorectal xenografts (LS147T [n = 6] and SW1222 [n = 6]). Scanning Electron Microscope Ste…

Small clusters with anisotropic antiferromagnetic exchange in a magnetic field

We consider small symmetric clusters of magnetic atoms (spins) with anisotropic exchange interaction between the atoms in a magnetic field at zero temperature. The inclusion of the anisotropy leads to a wealth of different phases as a function of the applied magnetic field. These are not phases in the thermodynamic sense with critical properties but rather physical structures with different arrangements of the spins and hence different symmetries. We study the spatial symmetry of these phases, for the classical and quantum cases. Results are presented mainly for three frustrated systems, the triangle, the tetrahedron and the five-atom ring, which have many interesting features. In the class…
