MEDLEM database, a data collection on large Elasmobranchs in the Mediterranean and Black seas

The Mediterranean Large Elasmobranchs Monitoring (MEDLEM) database contains more than 3,000 records (with more than 4,000 individuals) of large elasmobranch species from 21 different countries around the Mediterranean and Black seas, observed from 1666 to 2017. The principal species included in the archive are the devil ray (1,868 individuals), the basking shark (935 individuals), the blue shark (622 individuals), and the great white shark (342 individuals). In the last decades, other species such as the thresher shark (187 individuals), the shortfin mako (180 individuals), and the spiny butterfly ray (138) were reported with increasing frequency. This was possibly due to increased public a…

Prospezione speleoarcheologica della falesia «Piana di Sopra» a San Vito lo Capo (TP)

The northern coast of Trapani is characteristed by a series of phenomena linked to Quaternary glaciations. These phenomena have modeled esplanades, terraces, cliffs, leaf grooves and caves of great natural beuaty. The extreme strip of the Peninsula of S. Vito lo Capo, the Piana di Sopra, is made up of parareciphal limestones with Orbitoline and Rudist from the Cretaceous. This area has a strong density of cavities of marine origin estimated at four cavities per kilometer. These cavities are an important anthropological testimonly to a continual human presence from deep prehistory onwards. A fundamental prerequisite for a study of the prehistory of an area is its geomorphologic description w…

The first confirmed record of the Atlantic blue crab Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 (Decapoda, Brachyura) from Maltese waters

The invasive portunid species Callinectes sapidus is hereby recorded for the first time from Maltese waters, thus updating the known distribution of this decapod of Atlantic origin within the Mediterranean. Potential introduction pathways of the species to Maltese waters are discussed.

Much can change in a year: The massawan mantis shrimp, erugosquilla massavensis (Kossmann, 1880) in sicily, Italy

A flourishing population of the Massawan mantis shrimp, Erugosquilla massavensis, an Erythraean species, is recorded off Sicily, Italy, one year after the very first specimen was collected off the eastern coast of the island. The species is already established as a minor, albeit valuable, fishery resource. Once its population increases, however, it may compete with the native Mediterranean spot-tail mantis shrimp, Squilla mantis. This article presents the results of a joint effort between members of the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale of Comiso and local fishermen to monitor non-indigenous species in Sicilian waters.

First occurrence of the needle-spined urchin Diadema setosum (Leske, 1778) (Echinodermata, Diadematidae) in the southern Mediterranean Sea

The first occurrence of Diadema setosum in the southern Mediterranean waters is recorded from the shores of Libya and Egypt, through the input by citizens’ science. The expansion of this invasive sea urchin in the Mediterranean basin is briefly discussed.

Organometallic complexes with biological molecules: V.In vivo cytotoxicity of diorganotin(IV)-amoxicillin derivatives in mitotic chromosomes ofrutilus rubilio (pisces, cyprinidae)

In order to test in vivo cytotoxicity of diorganotin(IV)-amoxicillin (amox) derivatives, mitotic chromosomes of Rutilus rubilio (Pisces, Cyprinidae) have been analyzed using two different chromosome-staining techniques. Results gathered after exposure of fish to the free amox.3H 2 O, R 2 SnClamox.2H 2 O, and R 2 Snamox 2 .2H 2 O (R = methyl, butyl and phenyl ; amox - = 6-[D(-)-β-amino-p-hydroxyphenylacetamido]penicillinate) suggest that methyl derivatives seem to exert a lower cytotoxicity than butyl and phenyl ones and that R 2 Snamox 2 .2H 2 O derivatives are more toxic than R 2 Snclamox.2H 2 O at both 10 -5 and 10 -7 mol dm -3 concentrations. The following structural lesions have been id…
