Impact of Parkinson's disease risk loci on age at onset
Background The aim of this study was to assess whether recently identified Parkinson's disease (PD) risk genes also influence age at onset in PD. Methods We genotyped 23 single-nucleotide polymorphisms in 1,526 Danish PD patients and performed linear regression analyses with age at onset. The combined impact of PD risk loci on age at onset was assessed by linear regression analyses using a weighted genetic risk score. Results The strongest effects were observed with rs12726330 in GBA (beta = –3.63, P = 2.0 × 10−5) and rs34311866 in TMEM175/GAK (beta = –1.19, P = 4.0 × 10−3), corresponding to a 3.6-y and 1.2-y decrease of age at onset per risk allele, respectively. The weighted genetic risk …
Abstract 1832: Associations between ovarian cancer and other malignant neoplasms in an international population-based study
Abstract Recent studies have suggested that different histological types of ovarian cancer develop via different pathways. Large epidemiological studies of first and second malignant neoplasms associated with ovarian cancer can quantify such risk and may provide etiologic clues in understanding these complex pathways. We analyzed ovarian cancer data from 13 different cancer registries in Europe, Australia, Canada and Singapore from 1943-2000. Cumulative risks were calculated using a competing risk model, and standardized incidence ratios (SIR) for 34 cancers were estimated based on the observed numbers of second malignancies and the expected numbers obtained from population-specific inciden…
European code against cancer 4th edition: 12 ways to reduce your cancer risk
AbstractThis overview describes the principles of the 4th edition of the European Code against Cancer and provides an introduction to the 12 recommendations to reduce cancer risk. Among the 504.6 million inhabitants of the member states of the European Union (EU28), there are annually 2.64 million new cancer cases and 1.28 million deaths from cancer. It is estimated that this cancer burden could be reduced by up to one half if scientific knowledge on causes of cancer could be translated into successful prevention. The Code is a preventive tool aimed to reduce the cancer burden by informing people how to avoid or reduce carcinogenic exposures, adopt behaviours to reduce the cancer risk, or t…
