Metastatic tumors to the jaws: A report of eight new cases
Purpose: The purpose of the article is to present 8 new cases of metastatic tumors occurring in the jawbones, their clinical features , diagnostic workup and management. Patients and methods: The records of 8 patients with metastatic jaw lesions were reviewd. Demographic data, presenting symptoms, primary tumor site, radiographic findings, bone scintigraphy , histopathology and clinical management were analyzed. Results: The patients , ranged in age from 44 to 80 years, with a mean of 64.5 years. Drill failure during ORIF of the mandible : complication management
A case of a drill breakage during open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of a mandibular fracture is reported. The clinical decision, diagnosis and surgical management of the complication are described.
Solitary angiokeratoma of the tongue
Angiokeratoma is a rare cutaneous lesion. It can be either a generalized systemic form, pesenting as multiple asymptomatic papules on the skin, associated with metabolic diseases or a solitary cutaneous form. Oral cavity involvement is more common in the systemic form, as a part of a more generalized cutaneous disease, but very rare in the localized form of angiokeratoma. A 45-year-old female presented with a painless lesion on the tongue of one months duration, which bled occasionally. On clinical examination, a lesion of approximately 5 mm in diameter was observed on the left surface of the tongue. The lesion was purple in color with a granulomatous appearance . Stafne bone cavity: Magnetic resonance imaging
A case of Stafne bone cavity (SBC) affecting the body of the mandible of a 51-year-old female is reported. The imaging modalities included panoramic radiograph, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Panoramic radiograph and CT were able to determine the outline of the cavity and its three dimentional shape, but failed to precisely diagnose the soft tissue content of the cavity. MR imaging demonstrated that the bony cavity is filled with soft tissue that is continuous and identical in signal with that of the submandibular salivary gland. Iatrogenic mandibular fracture associated with third molar removal: Can it be prevented?
Removal of third molars is the most common procedure in oral surgery. It may be associated with complications, such as sensory damage , dry socket, infection and iatrogenic damage. A case of mandibular angle fracture during third molar extraction in a 37?year-old female is reported. Literature review on the possible etiologies and ways of prevention were recorded. The reason is believed to be multifactorial and include: age, gender, degree of impaction, relative volume of the tooth in the jaw, preexisting infection or bone lesions, failure to maintain a soft diet in the early postoperative period and the surgical technique.
