Specific, concentration-dependent uptake of vitellin by the oocytes ofNereis virens (Annelida, Polychaeta) in vitro
One purpose of this study was the development of methods for radioactive labeling and handling of the yolk protein of Nereis virens, another, the utilization of this tracer in nereid oocyte cultures to describe the kinetics and specificity of yolk protein uptake. Accumulation of labeled yolk protein by growing oocytes is linear over time, specific for yolk protein, and dependent on tracer concentration in the medium. Incorporation of yolk protein follows saturation kinetics which allows us to reproducibly determine the characteristics of this process. A morphometric comparison of dissimilar early development in sibling species of Platynereis (Annelida, Polychaeta)
Early development of Platynereis massiliensis was studied in serial sections of fixed embryos and in living or fixed embryos whose nuclei had been made visible with a fluorescent label. The unfertilized egg is an ellipsoid with three axes of differing length. The longest axis corresponds to the dorsoventral axis of the developing embryo. Egg volume is ten times that in the sibling species, P. dumerilii, mainly due to increased yolk content. The timing and spatial pattern of cleavage were observed from first cleavage to the 62-cell stage. The pronephros of the early ammocoete larva of lampreys (Cyclostomata, Petromyzontes): Fine structure of the renal tubules
The renal tubules of the paired pronephros in early larvae (ammocoetes) of two lamprey species, Lampetra fluviatilis and Petromyzon marinus, were studied by use of light-, scanning- and transmission electron microscopy. They consist of (1) a variable number of pronephric tubules (3 to 6), and (2) an excretory duct. By fine-structural criteria, the renal tubules can be divided into 6 segments. Each pronephric tubule is divided into (1) the nephrostome and (2) the proximal tubule, the excretory duct consisting of (3) a common proximal tubule followed by (4) a short intermediate segment, and then by a pronephric duct composed of (5) a cranial and (6) a caudal section. Molecular specification of cell lines in the embryo of Platynereis (Annelida)
In this study we describe the site and moment of histospecific differentiation in developmental stages of the annelid Platynereis dumerilii by use of biochemical markers. The monoclonal antibody (mab) OI7 and uncloned hybridoma supernatants (pAb's) OI8, OI10, OI46 and OI69 recognize neural antigens that appear asynchronously during development. By an enzymatic test, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was found specific for nervous tissue as well. The patterns of neural structures labelled by antibodies differ, however, from those revealed by AChE staining. Reproductive and developmental phenomena in annelids: a source of exemplary research problems
Specific traits of reproduction, of early and postembryonic development and of sexual maturation in annelids are reported, and the existing and expected contributions to this field from the study of annelids are discussed. The study of early development, as in other spiralians, reveals the existence of canonical cleavage patterns and the combined action of antithetical principles, namely determination by stereotypic sorting-out of ‘determinants’ and determination depending upon the interactions between the blastomeres. Sexual and reproductive traits of Hypania invalida (Polychaeta, Ampharetidae): a remarkable invasive species in Central European waterways
SUMMARY 1. The Ponto-Caspian polychaete Hypania invalida (Archiv fur Naturgeschichte, 1860, 26, 109) is undergoing rapid range expansion in the Rhine and other central European waterways. We examined its reproductive traits in an attempt to account for its remarkable invasive success. 2. For the first time in this species, we found males, dioecy (gonochorism) and an exclusively sexual mode of reproduction; no indication for hermaphroditism or (unisexual) partheno- genesis, that could explain the rapid range expansion of H. invalida, was found. 3. The polychaete Platynereis dumerilii (Annelida): a laboratory animal with spiralian cleavage, lifelong segment proliferation and a mixed benthic/pelagic life cycle.
Platynereis dumerilii, a marine polychaetous annelid with indirect development, can be continuously bred in the laboratory. Here, we describe its spectacular reproduction and development and address a number of open research problems. Oogenesis is easily studied because the oocytes grow while floating in the coelom. Unlike the embryos of other model spiralians, the Platynereis embryo is transparent giving insight into the dynamic structures and processes inside the cells that accompany the prevailing anisotropic cleavages. Vitellogenin from female and estradiol-stimulated male river lampreys (Lampetra fluviatilis L.)
The influence of estradiol-17β (E2) on vitellogenesis is well documented for a number of oviparous craniates. We have examined the role that estradiol-17β plays in the induction and regulation of vitellogenin synthesis in the maturing European river lamprey, Lampetra fluviatilis. In both females and males the estradiol-17β concentrations in the plasma reached comparable maximum values in March, only a few weeks before spawning. Throughout the spawning run, the vitellogenin titer in the blood of females remains rather constant while the ovary volume increases.
