Numerical study of surface waves generated by low frequency EM field for silicon refinement
One of the most perspective methods to produce solar grade silicon is refinement via metallurgical route. The most critical part of this route is refinement from boron and phosphorus due to high segregation coefficients. One possible approach to remove boron is use of reactive gas on surface of silicon melt. An approach of creating surface waves on silicon melt's surface is proposed in order to enlarge its area and accelerate removal of boron via chemical reactions. This paper focuses on numerical analysis of surface wave creation by means of low frequency magnetic field. Frequency of magnetic field and its amplitude significantly change the character of surface waves with most changes occu…
Burner backflow reduction in regeneration furnace
In the present case from the steel industry, waste hydrochloric acid from the pickling process is regenerated using spray roasting. The process is driven by four burners placed symmetrically along the periphery of the cylindrical main section of the reactor. Severe problems with gas backflow and sintering of iron oxide inside the burner chamber have led to a complete shut down of the process 1-2 times every week, which is a frequency which significantly affects the productivity. In this study the influence of a kick-out on the gas flow in the vicinity of the burner chamber is investigated numerically. It is shown that the kick-out geometry creates a vortical low pressure region preventing t…
Design of a System to Compose 50 Hz Alternating and Static Magnetic Field From Induction Coil and Permanent Magnets
We demonstrate a technical solution to achieve an intense 50 Hz alternating magnetic field and a static magnetic field made by a permanent magnet at the same place. A compact coil built using the Bitter coil concept is customized to support alternating current, thus creating an alternating magnetic field. A complementary permanent magnet assembly is built around it to achieve the superposition of both fields along the axis of symmetry. Results from the experimental model are compared to both numerical and analytical models.
