The parent-nurse relationship in the neonatal intensive care unit context - closeness and emotional involvement
Aim and background: Family-centred care, which acknowledges parents as partners in care, is a desirable and essential part of neonatal nursing. There has been extensive research on parents’ experiences of parenting in neonatal intensive care units (NICU), but there is little research on nurses’ experiences of being in these enduring close relationships. The aim of this paper is to explore parents’ and nurses’ experiences of the close parent–nurse relationship when a premature child is hospitalized. Method: The design was exploratory with a hermeneutic approach. The methods used were participant observation and in-depth interviews with six mothers, six fathers and six nurses in a Norwegian…
A cross-sectional study of Health Related Quality of Life and body mass index in a Norwegian school sample (8–18 years): a comparison of child and parent perspectives
Background Because consequences of pediatric overweight and obesity are largely psychosocial, the aim of this study was to describe health related quality of life (HRQoL), the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and to examine the relationships between HRQoL and body mass index (BMI), age, and gender in a Norwegian sample of schoolchildren. In addition, because children are dependent upon their parents’ judgment of their condition, the aim was also to compare child- and parent-reported HRQoL and BMI, age, and gender. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 1238 children (8–18 years) and 828 parents. HRQoL was measured with the Norwegian version of the KIDSCREEN-52, child and parent ve…
Sleep patterns and psychosocial health of parents of preterm and full-born infants: a prospective, comparative, longitudinal feasibility study

Teachers’ experiences of adolescents’ pain in everyday life: a qualitative study
Objectives More adolescents report pain now than previously. In Norway, episodic pain problems have been reported by 60% of children and adolescents aged 8–18 years, with 21% reporting duration of pain of more than 3 months. Since adolescents spend much time at school, the attitude and behaviour of teachers play important roles regarding the experience of pain felt by adolescents in everyday life. Yet research on how teachers perceive the pain experienced by adolescents in a school setting is limited. We therefore seek to gain insight to teachers’ classroom experiences with (1) adolescent's self-reported pain symptoms; (2) adolescents management of their pain and (3) how to help adolescents…

A comparison of mothers’ and fathers’ experiences of the attachment process in a neonatal intensive care unit
Aim. To compare mothers’ and fathers’ individual views and experiences of the attachment process in a neonatal intensive care unit within the first week after a premature birth. Background. The attachment between parents and children is a precursor to the consolidation of parenting skills, the growth and development of the infant and the establishment of a bond between parent and child. Premature birth and the resultant hospitalization disrupt the normal attachment process between parent and child. Most of the litteraure on attachment theory focuses on the mother–child connection and is being criticised for regarding the father's role as supportive and peripheral. Methods. The design of …

Health-related quality of life in adolescents with persistent pain and the mediating role of self-efficacy: a cross-sectional study
Abstract Background Persistent pain has a high prevalence among adolescents. Pain has been shown to reduce all aspects of the adolescent’s health-related quality of life (HRQOL). In adult patients with pain, self-efficacy has been shown to mediate the relationship between pain intensity, disability and depression. However, little is known about whether self-efficacy acts as a mediating variable in the relationship between persistent pain and HRQOL sub-scale scores in a school-based population of adolescents. Objectives To describe the experience of pain, HRQOL and self-efficacy, and to explore the association between pain intensity, general self-efficacy and HRQOL in adolescents with persis…
