Aerosol optical properties and instantaneous radiative forcing based on high temporospatial resolution CARSNET ground-based measurements over eastern China

Abstract. Variations in the optical properties of aerosols and their radiative forcing were investigated based on long-term synchronous observations made at three-minute intervals from 2011 to 2015 over seven adjacent CARSNET (China Aerosol Remote Sensing NETwork) urban (Hangzhou), suburban (Xiaoshan, Fuyang, LinAn, Tonglu, Jiande) and rural (ChunAn) stations in the Yangtze River Delta region, eastern China. The aerosol optical depth (AOD) varied from 0.68 to 0.76, with two peaks in June and September, and decreased from the eastern coast to western inland areas. Application of aerosol optical properties to estimate aerosol type from ground-based remote sensing observation at urban area of northeastern China

Abstract Aerosol optical properties were derived from ground-based sunphotometer observations between 2009-2013 at three urban sites of Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun in northeastern China. The annual means for extinction aerosol optical depths (EAOD) at 500 nm were 0.57±0.38, 0.52±0.35, and 0.41±0.31 at Shenyang, Anshan, Fushun, respectively. The corresponding annual means for the extinction Angstrom exponents (EAE) computed for the wavelengths of 440 and 870 nm were 0.86±0.32, 0.86±0.34 and 0.91±0.35, respectively, indicating that urban area of Northeast China were affected by both coarse and fine particles. The evolution of microphysical and optical properties of an A380 contrail in the vortex phase

A contrail from a large-body A380 aircraft at cruise in the humid upper troposphere has been probed with in-situ instruments onboard the DLR research aircraft Falcon. The contrail was sampled during 700 s measurement time at contrail ages of about 1–4 min. The contrail was in the vortex regime during which the primary wake vortices were sinking 270 m below the A380 flight level while the secondary wake remained above. Contrail properties were sampled separately in the primary wake at 90 and 115 s contrail age and nearly continously in the secondary wake at contrail ages from 70 s to 220 s. Contrast in column-integrated aerosol optical properties during heating and non-heating seasons at Urumqi — Its causes and implications

Abstract Aerosol optical properties were retrieved from two years' worth of Sunphotometer measurements at Urumqi, an urban station in western China. Distinct seasonal variations of aerosol optical properties were revealed. During the heating season, mean aerosol optical depth at 550 nm (τ a ), Angstrom exponent calculated from aerosol optical depth at wavelength of 440 and 870 nm (α) as well as PM 2.5 concentration were 0.58 ± 0.33, 1.11 ± 0.34 and 79.5 ± 69.6 μg m − 3 , respectively, which contrasted their counterparts during the non-heating season of 0.32 ± 0.22, 0.79 ± 0.26, and 35.0 ± 20.1 μg m − 3 . Influence of Saharan dust on cloud glaciation in southern Morocco during the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment

[1] Multiwavelength lidar, Sun photometer, and radiosonde observations were conducted at Ouarzazate (30.9°N, 6.9°W, 1133 m above sea level, asl), Morocco, in the framework of the Saharan Mineral Dust Experiment (SAMUM) in May–June 2006. The field site is close to the Saharan desert.
