Solid-state NMR and computational studies of tetratolyl urea calix[4]arene inclusion compounds.
Solid-state guest dynamics of tetratolyl tetraurea calix[4]arene tetrapentylether dimeric capsules filled with different types of aromatic guests such as benzene-d6, fluorobenzene-d5 and 1,4-difluorobenzene were studied. Upon inclusion, all guest moieties revealed complexation-induced shifts varying from 2.8 ppm to 5.1 ppm. All guest molecules were shown to undergo distinct motions, ranging from mere C6-rotations of benzene-d6 to (ill-defined) 180 degrees phenyl flips of fluorobenzene-d5. In all cases, dynamic heterogeneities were identified based on 2H lineshape deconvolution. In addition, by combination of both a computed nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS) map and explicit 19F and …

Dinitrogen complexation with main group radicals
In this report we present data from hyperfine sublevel correlation spectroscopy (HYSCORE), an electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopic technique, that reveals weak but distinct interactions between several main group element radicals and physically dissolved dinitrogen in solution. These interactions are the basis for a well-defined coordination of N2 to the paramagnetic centers. The complexes formed are primarily of the van der Waals-type but also feature a non-negligible orbital overlap between dinitrogen and the radicals' SOMO. Our spectroscopic findings are strongly supported by experiments with isotope-labeled 15N2, spectral simulations and quantum chemical and density funct…
Phycocyanobilin in solution – a solvent triggered molecular switch
We present a computational investigation of the conformational response of phycocyanobilin (PCB) to the ability of solvents to form hydrogen bonds. PCB is the chromophore of several proteins in light harvesting complexes. We determine the conformational distributions in different solvents (methanol and hexamethylphosphoramide HMPT) by means of ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and characterize them via ab initio calculations of NMR chemical shift patterns. The computed trajectories and spectroscopic fingerprints illustrate that the energy landscape is very complex and exhibits various conformations of similar energy. We elucidate the strong influence of the solvent characteristics on…
Mixed Grotthuss and Vehicle Transport Mechanism in Proton Conducting Polymers from Ab initio Molecular Dynamics Simulations
We elucidate the microscopic mechanism of long-range proton conduction in poly[vinyl phosphonic acid] (PVPA), a highly promising proton conducting polymer. Using a steered ab initio molecular dynamics approach, we characterize the charge transport functionality of acid groups interacting with nonbulk water molecules intercalated in the polymer. Our results show that in PVPA, unlike in Nafion, water has a local vehicle/carrier function for excess protons. This function must however be combined with the Grotthuss-type conduction mechanism that is supplied by the acid groups in order to yield long-range charge transport. As an additional aspect, we find that contrary to common intuition, syste…
