Effects of a specific training protocol on posturographic parameters of a taekwondo elite athlete and implications on injury prevention: A case study

Introduction: Taekwondo elite athletes should have excellent qualities in several aspects of fitness, as well as peculiar pos- tural characteristics in terms of balance and postural control, to achieve the best possible results during competitions. Moreover, it is known that taekwondo shows high risk of injury. The aim of this case study is to evaluate the effects of a specific training pro- tocol on posturographic parameters of a taekwondo elite athlete in order to prevent the risk of injury. Materials and methods: The specific training protocol provided 2 months of general strength conditioning, which included pre-conditioning in the first 2 weeks, physical training to improve explosive s…

Handgrip strength: a predictive indicator of upper body maximal strength?

In the last few years, Handgrip strength has been widely recognized as a relevant indicator of physical function, nutritional status and quality of life in a clinical population. The validity of this indicator has been reported in many experimental and epidemiological investigations, showing a significant association of this value with several physiological and not physiological parameters. Bone health, functional capacity, nutritional status as well as postoperative complications, increased length of hospitalization and higher rehospitalisation rate are all elements found to be strongly associated with an acceptable or with an impaired grip strength. These outcomes, as well as the possibil…

Development of software in the study of carotid artery in the neck.

The aim of this work was to develop and employ software for the study of the common carotid artery and its branches in the neck. We first constructed geometric models of anatomic components, for the building of knowledge bases to be used in automatic feature extraction techniques from images. Then, we developed a software system characterised by three-dimensional visualisation, image processing functions, knowledge base and a programming language to describe classification processing by means of fuzzy logic. The software system was used to perform automatic reconstruction of three-dimensional models of carotid arteries from contiguous CT scans of the neck. These findings suggest that such s…
