Functional relationships between emission by cars and urban pollutant concentrations: a simplified phenomenological approach

This work is aimed at providing a contribution toward the singling out of a functional relationship between the traffic flow in urban contexts and the physical dynamic of the pollutant diffusion. The values of CO concentrations in selected sites of the urban layout are obtained by utilizing as input the number of vehicles predicted by the phenomenological model here introduced. Green vs Traditional Roofs: Assessing their Actual Benefits through an Integrated Indicator Developed for Cool Roofs

Green roofs have caught on in cities, mainly because contribute positively to thermal behaviour of buildings equipped with them. This paper investigates the applicability to these roofs of an integrated indicator, developed by Levinson and Akbari, to assess the contribution of cool roofs to buildings’ energy consumption. A building, assumed as the reference for the Italian medium size offices, was considered and its energy performance with and without the green roof was assessed. Different sites with different climatic conditions were considered for the simulations. First results indicate that such indicator does not seem to be completely transferable to green roofs.

Multifunctional polyurethane foams with thermal energy storage/release capability

In this work, polyurethane (PU) insulating panels containing different amounts of a microencapsulated paraffin with a nominal melting temperature of 24 °C, used as phase change material (PCM), were produced. In this paper, a dynamic simulation of a building located in the Campus University of Palermo, Italy, has been carried out. We considered two different scenarios; in the first one, the building as it is, with a conventional covering, while in the second one the roof was equipped with a green roof. A simplified version of the ecological footprint method is proposed for assessing the environmental performances of urban transportation systems. The method, starting from the knowledge of the composition of the running vehicular fleet, is here applied to a southern Italian province. The ecological footprint methodology is here applied to the urban transport system of the Italian town of Palermo (Sicily). By only using the current running fleet, a synthetic indicator represented by the "equivalent bio-productive" land, corresponding to the actual transport configuration, will be built up. Sulla spinta delle sempre più stringenti normative in tema di efficienza energetica degli edifici, l’Università degli Studi di Palermo ha posto in essere un laboratorio di materiali naturali e di componenti edilizi passivi, finalizzato all’analisi delle prestazioni energetiche di elementi d’involucro caratterizzati da elevate prestazioni energetiche ed ambientali. In particolare, sono oggetto di indagini sperimentali alcuni elementi d’involucro realizzati con mix di materiali naturali e minerali ed alcune configurazioni di coperture a verde. I primi risultati sperimentali sembrano confermare la praticabilità di siffatte soluzioni, almeno limitatamente ai climi mediterranei.

Detailed construction analysis is essential to the compatible energy improvement of historic buildings. In-situ measurements are crucial for energy diagnosis but their use is limited, especially in vernacular architecture. The improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings calls for the availability of tools for evaluating and simulating the thermal behaviour of buildings.
