Api e pronubi selvatici nella produzione di Coriandrum sativum L. (Famiglia Apiaceae) in Sicilia occidentale
Coriandrum sativum L. (Apiaceae - Umbelliferae) is an aromatic annual plant, subspontaneous in several Mediterranean countries. It is cultivated in various states of western Asia, North Africa and Europe. In Italy with the increment of immigration the request of coriandrum fresh state (grass cimicina) and powder to seeds are in increase. In Sicilian territory, for estimating the role of pollinators (wild pollinators and bees) in the increment of seeds production of Coriandrum sativum, a triennial surveying has been carried out, comparing three treatments: self-pollination, bees pollination and free pollination. The production of Coriandrum sativum obtained have been in the first year of 132…

The determination of polyphenols content in white mulberry leaves.
E. Ciampi, G. Alonzo, A. Sinacori. Cultivation of Mulberry, particularly Morus alba L., was introduced in Europe between the ninth and the twelfth centuries together with sericulture. Mulberry as both Morus alba L. and Morus nigra L. Species, is a rustic plant, well suited for the Mediterranean climate and which is also appreciated for its fruits. Found in the past useful in medicinal applications, is now, from recent studies, indicated as potential health beneficial for the high content in polyphenol substances. Mulberry leaves from 13 varieties, grown in the experimental field of the University of Palermo, Agriculture Faculty, have been investigated for their content in antioxidant substa…

Palatability and in vivo digestibility of Mulberry leaves (Morus latifolia CV. Kokusou 21) in sheep feeding
Mulberry (Morus latifolia L.) leaves and green tops were utilised to study the palatability and the digestibility in two sheep feeding trials. In trial 1 mulberry palatability was determined by cafeteria test, that studies the animal preferences in a short period of time without the interference of post-ingestive factors. Mulberry leaves were tested in respect to vetch hay and oat concentrate; results showed that mulberry leaves were significantly preferred to other feeds. In trial 2 an in vivo digestibility was carried out on 4 rams equipped with the bags for the faeces collection, housed in individual box and fed ad libitum. Results showed that mulberry leaves and green tops were more dig…

A morphological and mitochondrial assessment of Apis mellifera from Palermo, Italy
A characterization of the honey bees from western Sicily (Palermo, Italy) is presented. Mor- phological comparisons to A. m. ligustica were made using data taken from honey bee populations from southeastern (Bari) and central (Emilia Romagna) Italy. The honey bees of the Palermo area have distinct morphological differences compared to the mainland honey bees. The mtDNA haplotype common in subspecies within the African lineage of A. mellifera predominated in the Sicilian honey bee samples (13 out of 16). These results suggest both the potential and the desirability to expend efforts to conserve A. m. sicula. © Inra/DIB/AGIB/Elsevier, Paris

Fast field Cycling NMR for quality characterization of typical sicilian honeys.
Proton NMR relaxometry with fast field cycling (FFC-NMR) setup is developing as a very promising tool for the characterization of agro-food matrices. In fact, some papers have been published reporting on differences among balsamic vinegars, porous properties of oil-water emulsions and quality of meat-products. In the present study, quality of some typical Sicilian honey samples has been evaluated by traditional wet-chemical analyses and FFC-NMR. Nine wet-chemical parameters have been measured such as water content, pH, acidity (free, lactonic and total acidity), fructose, glucose, saccharose, electrical conductivity, diastase activity and colour. Results showed that 84% of the samples were …
