'No speech at my command will fit the forms in my mind': Shaping the Spiritual through Writing and Typing in George MacDonald’s Lilith Manuscripts

2020

International audience; In “Lilith B” (1893), the most extensively rewritten draft of George MacDonald’s fantasy novel Lilith (1895), puzzling triangular-shaped insertions, some handwritten and some typed, although not retained in the later versions of the text, allow for a better understanding of the creative process and show how the material crafting of the manuscript, through collage and combination techniques, played a part in the invention of fantasy. The introduction of the typewriter as a new drafting tool in MacDonald’s writing habits, not only for copying but also for revising, corresponds to a shift in the metaphorical and allegorical system which enables the parallel worlds of th…

Réécrire des textes au Cycle 3, repenser les processus d’écriture en master MEEF : une expérimentation croisée à partir de brouillons d’écrivains jeu…

2018

This paper purports to shed light on primary school teachers’ initial training in the field of creative writing, rewriting and rough draft practices. It analyses a corpus of various pieces of writing by school children and trainee teachers, collected through the implementation of a teaching unit using authors’ and children’s literature writers’ drafts and working documents with children aged 8-11 (CE2-CM) on the one hand, and with trainee teachers on the other. As part of a seminar on introduction to research, these trainee teachers thus questioned their own writing practices, their conception of rewriting and their teaching practices

The Collaboration of Lewis Carroll and Harry Furniss: illustrating the Sylvie and Bruno books

2008

The collaboration between Harry Furniss and Lewis Carroll did not stem from friendship, but from necessity: Carroll always illustrated his own texts as he wrote them, but his drawing skills were not good enough for publication. Yet it was impossible for him to write up the novel if the illustrating process did not take place simultaneously. To what extent is the collaborative creation of Sylvie and Bruno a real dialogue? Did Carroll only consider Furniss as an extension of himself? The correspondence between the two men allows us to analyse the complex relationship between the writer and the artist, but also acts as a prism that decomposes Carrollian creation into its graphic and textual co…
