Expression of 60-kD Heat Shock Protein Increases during Carcinogenesis in the Uterine Exocervix

Objectives: The aim of the present study was to determine the presence and expression of the 60-kD heat shock protein (HSP60) in the dysplasia-carcinoma sequence in the uterine exocervix and to evaluate its diagnostic and prognostic significance. Methods and Results: We performed Western blot and immunohistochemical analyses on biopsies from 40 cases, consisting of 10 normal exocervical biopsies, 10 low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (L-SIL), 10 high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (H-SIL) and 10 cancerous exocervices (G2 grade). The immunohistochemical results were quantified by computer-assisted image analysis. Western blot analysis sho…

Open Radical Nephrectomy: 35 Years of Experience at the “Luciano Giuliani” Urological Department of the University of Genoa

Objective: Radical nephrectomy remains the gold standard for surgically resectable kidney neoplasms > 4 cm and, in selected cases, also in presence of metastatic disease. We reviewed the records of the patients having surgery at the University of Genoa in the last 35 yr. Methods: We have retrospectively assessed all the radical nephrectomies performed between 1970 and 2005. Among tumours of the kidney subjected to surgical treatment during this period, we found 1105 cases of histologically proven renal cell carcinoma (RCC), 965 of which had records available for the study. The number of cases per year, symptoms at diagnosis, surgical strategy, staging of the tumour, and survival were rev…

Can side-specific biopsy findings predict the side of nodal metastasis in clinically localized prostate cancer? Results from a multicenter prospective survey

Background To evaluate the correlation between the side of positive biopsy (Bx) and the risk of lymph-node metastases (LNMs) on each side and to quantify the risk of contralateral LNMs in patients with unilateral positive biopsy. Methods We analyzed the outcomes of 1599 patients with complete data regarding the sides of positive Bx and LN (lymph-node). By dividing each prostate into two separate sides, we assessed the accuracy of the side-specific Bx details in determining the side of positive nodes; the area under the receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) (AUCs) was used. For patients with unilateral positive Bx, we assessed the risk of homolateral and contralateral LNMs according to the…

The impact of prior TURP on radical prostatectomy surgical margins: A multicenter analysis and members of the mirror study, LUNA foundation

Objective: To analyze positive surgical margins (PSM) after radical prostatectomy (RP) in the overall population and in patients previously treated with transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). Materials and Methods: 2,408 patients treated with RP for clinically localized prostate cancer (PCa) were consecutively enrolled in 135 departments. We correlated PSM rates and all preoperative, surgical and pathological features. We stratified the site of PSM as unique or multifocal. Moreover, we analyzed differences between 75 patients who had undergone previous TURP and the remaining 2,333 patients. Results: In the entire study population, we identified 702 patients with PSM (29%). Using un…

Predicting survival in node-positive prostate cancer after open, laparoscopic or robotic radical prostatectomy: A competing risk analysis of a multi-institutional database

Objectives: To investigate cancer-specific mortality and other-cause mortality in prostate cancer patients with nodal metastases. Methods: The study included 411 patients treated with radical prostatectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection for prostate cancer with lymph node metastases at 10 tertiary care centers between 1995 and 2014. Kaplan–Meier analyses were used to assess cancer-specific mortality-free survival rates at 8 years' follow up in the overall population, and after stratifying patients according to clinical and pathological parameters. Uni- and multivariable competing risk Cox regression analyses were used to assess cancer-specific mortality and other-cause mortality. Finally,…
