Synthesis and radical polymerization of novel methacrylates with mesoionic 6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-3-ium-4-olates as photosensitive components

New polymerizable mesoionic 6-oxo-1,6-dihydropyrimidin-3-ium-4-olates 5a-f have been synthesized using tosylated 2-hydroxymethyl methacrylate and various thioureas and malonic acids. Radical polymerization of the mesoionic derivatives 5a, c, d, e with AIBN as initiator resulted in soluble polymers, which were used for the preparation of photosensitive films.

Survival of Snow in the Melting Layer: Relative Humidity Influence

AbstractThis study quantifies how far snow can fall into the melting layer (ML) before all snow has melted by examining a combination of in-situ observations from aircraft measurements in Lagrangian spiral descents from above through the ML and descents and ascents into the ML, as well as an extensive database of NOAA surface observer reports during the past 50 years. The airborne data contain information on the particle phase (solid, mixed, or liquid), population size distributions and shapes, along with temperature, relative humidity, and vertical velocity. A wide range of temperatures and ambient relative humidities are used for both the airborne and ground-based data. It is shown that a…

Comparative study on immersion freezing utilizing single-droplet levitation methods

Immersion freezing experiments were performed utilizing two distinct single-droplet levitation methods. In the Mainz vertical wind tunnel, supercooled droplets of 700 µm diameter were freely floated in a vertical airstream at constant temperatures ranging from −5 to −30 ∘C, where heterogeneous freezing takes place. These investigations under isothermal conditions allow the application of the stochastic approach to analyze and interpret the results in terms of the freezing or nucleation rate. In the Mainz acoustic levitator, 2 mm diameter drops were levitated while their temperature was continuously cooling from +20 to −28 ∘C by adapting to the ambient temperature. Therefore, in this case th…
