Acid-Base Properties and their Influence on the Photoreactivity of Oxides
It is described the existence on the surface of a solid of acidic and basic centres. The correlation with electron donor-acceptor properties is described. The influence of such centres in influencing the reactivity in a photocatalytic process is discussed. The case of ethanoic acid photodecarboxylation over a series of insulator and semiconductor oxides and their mixtures is briefly reported outlining how the acid-base properties affect the photoreactivity.
Radiation model of a TiO2-coated, quartz wool, packed-bed photocatalytic reactor
The radiation field of a packed-bed photocatalytic reactor filled with quartz wool coated with titanium dioxide was modeled using the Monte Carlo technique and the following information: the radiation flux emitted by the lamps, the diameter size distribution of the quartz fiber cloth, the mass of quartz fibers and of TiO2 that was immobilized on the fiber surface as well as the refractive index and the spectral absorption coefficient of the materials of the system. Modeling predictions were validated with radiometer measurements of the transmitted radiation through the reactor, the root mean square error being < 9.7%. Finally, by means of a parametric study, the validated model was used to …
Comparison of the Photoelectronic and Photocatalytic Activities of Various Anatase and Rutile Forms of Titania in Pure Liquid Organic Phases and in Aqueous Solutions
Various titania samples of industrial origin (Degussa and Tioxide) have been characterized by electrical photoconductance measurements and tested as photocatalysts in various liquid media (either pure organic liquids or aqueous solutions) as a function of their structure (anatase versus rutile). Anatase was constantly found more active than rutile, whatever the reaction chosen (mild oxidation of pure cyclohexane and 2-propanol; total degradation of phenol and nitrophenol isomers in water). In identical conditions, Degussa was found more active, but the intrinsic activity, expressed in moles converted per hour and per square meter of active surface, was found slightly higher for anatase Tiox…
