The aristaless (Arx) gene: one gene for many "interneuronopathies".
The ARX (Aristaless-related (X-linked) homeobox) gene is not only present in arthropods and their ancestors, but also in vertebrates including humans (ARX orthologs). The gene is composed of 5 coding exons and it is expressed predominantly in foetal and adult brain and skeletal muscle. In this review we report on our experience and review the existing literature on the genotype and phenotype heterogeneity associated with ARX abnormalities in humans ranging from severe neuronal migration defects (e.g., lissencephaly), to mild forms of X-linked mental retardation without apparent brain abnormalities. The ARX-related disorders are reviewed focusing on their clinical features and on the role of…
Deconfinement vs. chiral symmetry and higher representation matter
The interplay of deconfinement and chiral symmetry restoration are considered in terms of effective theories. We generalize the earlier model studies by considering fermions in higher representations, and study the finite temperature phase diagrams of SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theories with two fermion flavors in fundamental, adjoint or two-index symmetric representations. We discuss our results in relation to recent lattice simulations on these theories and outline possible applications in the context of dynamical electroweak symmetry breaking.
A DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE MANAGEMENT APPROACH TO ANALYSE THE PERFORMANCE OF MUSEUMS: THE GALLERY OF MODERN ART IN PALERMO
The present research shows how useful the application of the dynamic performance management approach is in the analysis of museum performance. The combination of the performance management with the system dynamics approach, may allow both managers and public decision makers in the identification of those performance drivers on which to intervene to affect museum performance. The Gallery of Modern Art in Palermo has been chosen as a representative case study of the current analysis. The strong interrelationship between back-office and front-office units in the implementation of the institutional activities of the analyzed museum as well as their impact on the image of the Gallery will be exp…
prospettive per un Museo Archeologico: il caso di Modica
The essay examines the premises to the planning of the Archaeological and Ethnographical Museum of Modica, in the more genral framework of the local area. The necessity is emphasized to conceive a Museum for everyone and to reinterpret the collections in the light of the ttempts to construct an authentic myth of the local territory and its history, centralized, evidently, on its main cultural resource, and that is on archaeology.Unlike the museal exhibition, pushingly drawing towards renovation, the architecture of museums shows a certain resitance against any revamping. It is necessary to work out the antithesis between maintaining the character of a historical building and its using in or…
