This article examines working age Russian-speaking migrants, and their paths in looking for a place in the Finnish work and professional communities. The integration process is examined in three focal settings: 1) aspiration settings in which migrants are preparing to participate in work and professional communities; 2) achievement settings in which migrants have successfully entered work and professional communities, and 3) abandonment settings in which migrants have been marginalized from work and professional communities and have given up their aspirations to integrate into these communities. Russian-speaking immigrant teachers in Finnish classrooms : Views and lived experiences in Finnish education

Success of integration depends, amongst other things, on immigrants’ involvement in the host country’s education. Educational differences between home and host countries can either promote or hinder academic progress of immigrants and, consequently, overall process of their integration. The goal of this study is to investigate what effect differences between educational systems of Finland and neighbouring Russia may have on professional induction of Russian-speaking immigrant teachers in Finland. Monikielisyys ja demokratia : esimerkkinä venäjänkieliset maahanmuuttajat Suomessa

This article looks at the multilingualism of Russian-speaking immigrants in Finland in terms of democracy. The main focus in the paper is on the possibilities of and constraints on the use of Finnish and Russian, competence in these languages, and their meaning for speakers of Russian in Finnish society. The article describes how these immigrants see their linguistic situation and possibilities of maintaining and developing different languages. Finally, conclusions are drawn on how democracy and language rights are carried out in integration of Russian-speaking immigrants into Finnish society.
