Promoting mathematical skills using the instructive program Kriging

Geostatistics was developed in mining for the grade estimation problems of ore deposits, nowadays; it is the most popular method for the interpolation and estimation problems. Methodological consideration about its interpolator, the Kriging, is presented in this paper. For geosciences engineering and other students in general is important to take in advance interpolation methods. This methodology is coming from natural phenomenon, where it is very difficult or even impossible to build deterministic models, only it is possible to describing the behavior from fragmented information of the problem studied. The characterization of the spatial variables using geostatistics has, in general, two m…

Aperiodic Diffract: Study of diffraction gratings

[EN] In this work we introduce a virtual laboratory, APERIODIC DIFFRACT, developed in Matlab GUI (Graphical User Interface) as an informatics tool for teaching the diffractive properties of aperiodic gratings. This GUI allows the student to generate aperiodic sequences by iterating and lets to study the spectra for different iterating orders.

Visual acuity with computer simulated and lens-induced astigmatism

[EN] The relationship between spherical and astigmatic refractive errors and their associated visual acuity is investigated in this work by means of two different approaches. In the first one, different refractive errors were induced in normal subjects by trial lenses. In the second one, defocused images were simulated numerically by the optical transfer function of a model eye and then judged by the same subjects. The amount of defocus (measured in terms of the modulus of the dioptric power vector) necessary to reduce the visual acuity to 0.1 logMAR and to 0.4 logMAR was computed with each method and then compared. We found that the visual system is clearly more tolerant to lens-induced de…

Multiplexing of encrypted data using fractal masks

In this Letter, we present to the best of our knowledge a new all-optical technique for multiple-image encryption and multiplexing, based on fractal encrypting masks. The optical architecture is a joint transform correlator. The multiplexed encrypted data are stored in a photorefractive crystal. The fractal parameters of the key can be easily tuned to lead to a multiplexing operation without cross talk effects. Experimental results that support the potential of the method are presented.

Diseño físico-matemático de un espectrómetro óptico

[EN] This work presents the design and construction of a spectrometer made in the laboratory and the development of mathematical models needed to process and analyze the acquired spectrum. For modeling functions it has been used LabVIEW program. The aim is to bring this type of instrumentation to engineering students from both, physical and mathematical point of view. The application has been successfully integrated in the learning strategies of the course Sensores Fisicos, Master Universitario en Sensores Para Aplicaciones Industriales at the Universitat Politecnica de Valencia. As an example, we have characterized different light sources emitting in different regions of the electromagneti…
