FLUMO: FLexible Underwater MOdem

The last years have seen a growing interest in underwater acoustic communications because of its applications in marine research, oceanography, marine commercial operations, the offshore oil industry and defense. High-speed communication in the underwater acoustic channel has been challenging because of limited bandwidth, extended multipath, refractive properties of the medium, severe fading, rapid time variation and large Doppler shifts. In this paper, we show an implementation of a flexible Software-Defined Acoustic (SDA) underwater modem, where modulation parameters are completely tunable to optimize performance. In particular, we develop the system architecture following two key ideas. …

Optimal Resource Allocation in Multi-Hop Networks: Contention vs. Scheduling

CSMA/CA (Carrier Sense Multiple Access/Collision Avoidance) is actually the most used method in ad-hoc networks for transmitting on a contending medium, even if it shows poor performance in presence of hidden nodes. To increase performance, we propose an algorithm that combines CSMA and TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) approaches. The adopted solution consists of grouping contending nodes in non-interfering subsets and granting a different numbers of time slots to different groups, while using the CSMA to manage medium access among nodes belonging to the same subset. An optimization procedure to assign the time slots to each subset of nodes and to find an equilibrium between contention …

Performance Optimization in Wireless Local Area Networks

Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN) are becoming more and more important for providing wireless broadband access. Applications and networking scenarios evolve continuously and in an unpredictable way, attracting the attention of academic institutions, research centers and industry. For designing an e cient WLAN is necessary to carefully plan coverage and to optimize the network design parameters, such as AP locations, channel assignment, power allocation, MAC protocol, routing algorithm, etc... In this thesis we approach performance optimization in WLAN at di erent layer of the OSI model. Our rst approach is at Network layer. Starting from a Hybrid System modeling the ow of tra c in the net…

HLPV Identication in wireless ad hoc networks

Hybrid systems are dynamical systems consisting of components with con- tinuous and discrete behavior and thus they have required a new hybrid systems and control theory that has been developed in the past years and is still an active research topic. Motivated by a practical example, the tra c ow in wireless ad hoc network model, we derive Hybrid LPV modeling and identi cation techniques. Finally we show simulation results of o line identi cation and possible future algorithms.

Optimal power flow in islanded microgrids using a simple distributed algorithm

In this paper, the problem of distributed power losses minimization in islanded distribution systems is dealt with. The problem is formulated in a very simple manner and a solution is reached after a few iterations. The considered distribution system, a microgrid, will not need large bandwidth communication channels, since only closeby nodes will exchange information. The correction of generated active powers is possible by means of the active power losses partition concept that attributes a portion of the overall power losses in each branch to each generator. The experimental part shows the first results of the proposed method on an islanded microgrid. Simulation results of the distributed…

Optimum Design and Performance of an Electron Gun for a Ka-Band TWT

This paper deals with optimum design and development of a thermionic electron gun to meet specified beam requirements within defined electric and geometric constraints for a Ka -band traveling wave tube (TWT) for space applications. The electron gun design is based on the Pierce method and carried out according to the iterative process indicated by Vaughan. The design of a periodic permanent magnet (PPM) beam focusing system for the stability of the beam is also required. A sensitivity analysis, by varying electric parameters and geometric parameters, is presented and taken into account as a fundamental role to the aim of optimizing the design of the Pierce gun. A cathode current value of 5…

Design of a 1 kW output power Folded Waveguide TWT operating in ka-band

A Ka-band Serpentine Folded Waveguide Travelling Wave Tube (TWT) has been designed. The imposed design parameters values in terms of high power, high load, wide bandwidth, low weight, along with a structure manufactured with planar technique or by means of a micro milling process, have been obtained. Small signal simulations have been carried out with an in-house software for interaction impedance evaluation. The commercial electromagnetic simulation code CST Suite has been used for dispersion diagram prediction. An optimization of the one-dimensional software, normally used for large-signal simulation in coupled cavity TWTs (“Computer Program for Analysis of Coupled-cavity Travelling-wave-…
