De L'Espill de la vida religios al desitjós: Notes a una novel.la al.legòrica del segle XVI

The contribution of the author of this article to the study of this religious novel inspired by Ramón Llull is to demonstrate that the text we now know derives from a longer text, the author of which must have belonged to the Observants belonging to the Fransciscan order. The author also offers his reflections on diverse themes that have not been analysed so far in the abbreviated version of the «Spill de la vida religiosa».

Through a rhyming catalogue of Valencian writers included in his «Segunda parte de Orlando» (Second part of Orlando) (1555) and through other verses in the work, Nicolau Espinosa argues in favour of a cultured literary tradition in a new language, Castilian Spanish. Moreover, the intention to identify the patronage of the dukes of Oliva with that of the dukes of Ferrara, through skilful parallels between Ariosto’s «Orlando» and Espinosa’s composition can be clearly seen.

The well-known Sonnet XIII by Garcilaso de la Vega «A Dafne ya los brazos le crecían» was to establish the disconsolate figure of Apollo, pining for the loss of Daphne, as the literary paradigm of the pangs of love —at least in Renaissance literature in the Iberian peninsula. Thus, a century later, Francesc Fontanella revisited the Garcilaso sonnet and carried out a profoundly Baroque re-reading. Després de repassar la bibliografia crítica i els textos poètics derivats, es procedeix a l’anàlisi d’un conegut sonet de Francesc Vicent Garcia, rector de Vallfogona (1578/1579-1623): «A una hermosa dama de cabell negre, que es pentinava en un terrat ab una pinta de marfil», que comença «Ab una pinta de marfil polia», en què l’autor mostra una habilitat poètica excepcional. S’insereix després el text en el seu context estètic i històric, el barroc europeu, i finalment se’l compara amb una sèrie de sonets equivalents, sobre el mateix motiu, produïts per autors castellans, portuguesos, italians i francesos.
