Effect of denture wearing on occurrence of fungal Isolates in the oral cavity: A pilot study
Objectives: An attempt was made to evaluate effect of denture wearing on occurrence of fungal isolates in the oral cavity before and after complete denture insertion. Method: Twenty five completely edentulous patients were selected; swab samples were collected intraorally before fabrication of complete dentures from labial vestibular area and after complete denture fabrication (one and four days after denture insertion). Further these samples were inoculated and incubated. Results: In nineteen patients no isolate of fungus before denture insertion as well as 4 days after denture insertion was found. In two subject results were false positive (contamination from environment), and in four pat…
Costochondral Grafts in the treatment of Temporomandibular joint ankylosis: a Clinical Study
Background: Treatment of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis usually requires adequate excision of the involved ankylotic block (arthroplasty) without interposing any material (gap arthroplasty) or interpositional arthroplasty using autogenous or alloplastic materials. The objective of this paper was to note the potential of the costochondral graft (CCGs) as an interpositional material and to see whether they induce normal growth potential in the reconstructed mandible. Materials and method: The ankylosed temporomandibular joint was reached by a preauricular incision with or without angulation and exposed. In the first 4 cases, arthroplasty was done using a bur. The bony mass was detach…
GTF2I Mutation in Thymomas: Independence From Racial-Ethnic Backgrounds. An Indian/German Comparative Study
Thymomas are the most frequent adult mediastinal cancers. Their etiology is unknown and their pathogenesis poorly understood. Racial, ethnic and environmental factors influence tumorigenesis in many cancers, but their role in thymomas remains unclear to date. In this study that included pretreatment thymoma cases from India and Germany (n = 37 and n = 77, respectively) we compared i) the prevalence of the thymoma-specific chromosome 7 c.74146970T > A mutation of the GTF2I gene in type A and AB thymomas; ii) epidemiological features; and iii) the frequency of myasthenia gravis (MG). Due to a known predominance of GTF2I mutation in A and AB histotypes, we included only a marginal numbe…
Garlic and Cancer
Special Issue; International audience; This review summarizes current knowledge on the anticarcinogenic properties of garlic. Collectively epidemiologic studies – mostly casecontrol studies – provide strong evidence that garlic consumption reduces the risk of cancer especially, the risk of gastric and colon cancer. Furthermore many experimental studies demonstrate that organosulfur compounds (OSCs) and garlic extracts can prevent or slow down the carcinogenic process induced by a variety of chemical carcinogens in animals. Garlic and OSCs have been shown to be active during all the stages of carcinogenesis. Several mechanisms have been proposed to explain the cancer-preventive effects of ga…
