Classical Myths on the Victorian Popular Stage: the Figure of Cassandra
The scope of the present thesis is to unveil the cultural processes behind the reception of the Cassandra myth in Victorian burlesque theatre. The main focus is on the semiotic dialogue between arts and reality which features nineteenth-century popular theatre as an essential tool for reading the social history of Victorian England. My principal argument is that the analysis of the convergence of popular, iconic and literary refigurations of classical myths and their representation on the Victorian popular stage underscores the relevance of burlesque both as a reflecting and a refracting mirror of the contemporary mindset. The texts and cultural objects under analysis in this thesis are in …
The Voice of Cassandra: Florence Nightingale's Cassandra (1852) and the Victorian Woman
In an undated letter to her sister Parthenope (c. 1844), Florence Nightingale wrote:"What is life? It cannot be merely a gaining of experience it is freedom, voluntary force, free-will, & therefore must be a hard fought battle in order to make a choice, there must be evil & good to choose from" (Vicinus & Nergaard 1990: 25). As a victim aware of the social constraints that Victorian women had to tackle in their development as independent citizens, Nightingale fought for further education, for a life outside marriage and for the establishment of midwifery as a respected profession. In such a gallant endeavour, the most passionate battle which she undertook was to acquire a voice which would …
Christa Wolf’s Cassandra is the landmark for refigurations of the Cassandra myth in the contemporary novel. Yet close to its date of publication, Ursule Molinaro (1979), Christine Brooke-Rose (1984) and Hilary Bailey (1993) published their own novelistic reworkings of the Cassandra myth. The presence of the Cassandra myth in the British novel is in contrast with the fruitful reworkings of the Trojan princess in poetry and drama. From the nineteenth century onwards, refigurations of Cassandra in prose writings in English range from the feminist essay to the novel of customs and the fin-de-siècle New Women utopias. Works such as Florence Nightingale’s Cassandra, for example, show how the word…
Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at the Roman Theatre of Sagunto (1982-2008)
Since 1982, the Spanish historical town of Sagunto has hosted the festival of Sagunt a Escena, which celebrated its twenty-fifth season in 2008. Throughout these years, more than fifty Greek and Roman tragedies, comedies, and plays inspired by classical themes have been put on stage between the months of June and September. Despite the heterogeneity of the festival, conceived as an ensemble of plays, dance, and street theatre, the performances based on classical themes have traditionally been considered the pièce de résistence of its repertoire. As a consequence, some of the world’s most acclaimed cotemporary actors, actresses, stage directors and companies such as Irene Papas, Michael Caco…
