MODELLING VAGUE KNOWLEDGE FOR DECISION SUPPORT IN PLANNING ARCHAEOLOGICAL PROSPECTIONS

2012

Abstract. Most archaeological predictive models lack significance because fuzziness of data and uncertainty in knowledge about human behaviour and natural processes are hardly ever considered. One possibility to cope with such uncertainties is utilization of probability based approaches like Bayes Theorem or Dempster-Shafer-Theory. We analyzed an area of 50 km2 in Rhineland Palatinate (Germany) near a Celtic oppidum by use of Dempster-Shafer's theory of evidence for predicting spatial probability distribution of archaeological sites. This technique incorporates uncertainty by assigning various weights of evidence to defined variables, in that way estimating the probability for supporting a …

A Multimedia Museum Application Based Upon a Landscape Embedded Digital 3D Model of an Ancient Settlement

2012

This paper describes the development of a digital reconstruction of the celtic hillfort “Altburg” (Germany), which was generated in the context of a museums exhibition in the Hunsruck-Museum Simmern (Germany). This model refers to the City GML standard and considers the principles of the London Charter for establishing internationally recognized principles for the use of three-dimensional visualization by researchers, educators and cultural heritage organizations.

Inland harbours : First results and perspectives of the project Inland harbours in Central Europe on the French territory

2019

Inland harbours, essential links between the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, are the object of the Priority Program Studies of inland harbours in Central Europe as hubs for European communication networks, funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). Since 2016, the project has also focused on the French inland river network, in association with the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena (Germany) and the University of Burgundy (Dijon, France).Inland harbours can be perceived as multifaceted phenomena, based on comparative, diachronic, multidisciplinary analyses. The modes of harbour installation and the socio-economic processes are examined here, together with the management of wate…
