Internal Consistency and Stability of the CANTAB Neuropsychological Test Battery in Children

The Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) is a computerassessed test battery widely use in different populations. The internal consistency and one-year stability of CANTAB tests were examined in school-aged children. Two hundred-thirty children (57% girls) from 5 schools in the Jyväskylä school district in Finland participated in the study in spring 2011. The children completed the following CANTAB tests: a) visual memory (Pattern Recognition Memory [PRM] and Spatial Recognition Memory [SRM]), b) executive function (Spatial Span [SSP], Stockings of Cambridge [SOC], and Intra-Extra Dimensional Set Shift [IED]), and c) attention (Reaction Time [RTI] and Rapid Visual Inf…

Objectively measured physical activity, body composition and physical fitness : Cross-sectional associations in 9- to 15-year-old children

The aim of this study was to examine and quantify the cross-sectional associations of body composition (BC), physical activity (PA) and sedentary time (ST) with physical fitness (PF) in children and adolescents. A sample of 594 Finnish students (56% girls), aged 9–15 (12.4 ± 1.3 years) were selected for a study performed in 2013. The measurements of the Move! monitoring system for physical functional capacity were used to measure cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal fitness and fundamental movement skills. Moderate-to-vigorous PA (MVPA) and ST were measured objectively with an accelerometer and BC by a bioelectrical impedance analysis. Fat mass index (FMI) and fat-free mass index (FFMI) we…

Lihassolutyypin vaikutus kehon rasvakudoksen määrään nuorilla ja vanhoilla miehillä

Syväoja, Heidi 2008. Lihassolutyypin vaikutus kehon rasvakudoksen määrään nuorilla ja vanhoilla miehillä. Liikuntafysiologian kandidaatintutkielma. Liikuntabiologian laitos, Jyväskylän yliopisto, 35. Lihavuus on maailmanlaajuinen yleistyvä ongelma.

Effects of exercise intensity on recovery of autonomic nervous system immediately after exercise and during sleep, and on subjective and objective sleep quality

Syväoja, Heidi. 2010. Effects of exercise intensity on recovery of autonomic nervous system immediately after exercise and during sleep, and on subjective and objective sleep quality. Master´s thesis in Exercise Physiology. Department of Biology of Physical Activity. University of Jyväskylä, 90. The exercise can be considered as a one form of stress, because it induces marked changes in the autonomic regulation of heart rate (HR). During acute exercise, parasympathetic activity decreases and sympathetic activity increases. Parasympathetic activity declines a lot or even disappears, when the exercise intensity is high. After acute exercise cessation, fast changes occur in the cardiac functio…

Spectral signatures of cross-modal attentional control in the adolescent brain and their link with physical activity and aerobic fitness levels

AbstractTop–down attentional control seems to increase and suppress the activity of sensory cortices for relevant stimuli and to suppress activity for irrelevant ones. Higher physical activity (PA) and aerobic fitness (AF) levels have been associated with improved attention, but most studies have focused on unimodal tasks (e.g., visual stimuli only). The impact of higher PA or AF levels on the ability of developing brains to focus on certain stimuli while ignoring distractions remains unknown. The aim of this study was to examine the neural processes in visual and auditory sensory cortices during a cross-modal attention–allocation task using magnetoencephalography in 13–16-year-old adolesce…
