New lifetime measurements in Pd-109 and the onset of deformation at N=60

Several new subnanosecond lifetimes were measured in Pd-109 using the fast-timing beta gamma gamma (t) method. Fission fragments of the A = 109 mass chain were produced by bombarding natural uranium with 30 MeV protons at the Jyvaskyla Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line (IGISOL) facility. Lifetimes were obtained for excited states in Pd-109 populated following beta decay of Rh-109. The new lifetimes provide some insight into the evolution of nuclear structure in this mass region. In particular, the distinct structure of the two low-lying 7/2(+) states occurring systematically across the Pd isotopic chain is supported by the new lifetime measurements. Total absorption spectroscopy of fission fragments relevant for reactor antineutrino spectra

The accurate determination of reactor antineutrino spectra remains a very active research topic for which new methods of study have emerged in recent years. Indeed, following the long-recognized reactor anomaly (measured antineutrino deficit in short baseline reactor experiments when compared with spectral predictions), the three international reactor neutrino experiments Double Chooz, Daya Bay and Reno have recently demonstrated the existence of spectral distortions in their measurements with respect to the same predictions. Total absorption studies of high priority decays for reactor applications: ⁸⁶Br and ⁹¹Rb

Preliminary results from beta decay studies of nuclei that are important for reactor applications are presented. The beta decays have been studied using the total absorption technique (TAS) and the pure beams provided by the JYFLTRAP system at the IGISOL facility of the University of Jyvaskyla.

Comparison of electromagnetic and nuclear dissociation of ¹⁷Ne

The Borromean drip-line nucleus ¹⁷Ne has been suggested to possess a two-proton halo structure in its ground state. In the astrophysical rp-process, where the two-proton capture reaction ¹⁵O(2p,γ) ¹⁷Ne plays an important role, the calculated reaction rate differs by several orders of magnitude between different theoretical approaches. To add to the understanding of the ¹⁷Ne structure we have studied nuclear and electromagnetic dissociation. A 500 MeV/u¹⁷Ne beam was directed toward lead, carbon, and polyethylene targets. Multiparticle emission in the decay of Ar-31

A multihit capacity setup was used to study the decay of the dripline nucleus 31Ar, produced at the ISOLDE facility at CERN. A spectroscopic analysis of the β-delayed three-proton decay of 31Ar is presented for the first time together with a quantitative analysis of the β-delayed 2pγ decay. A new method for determination of the spin of low-lying levels in the βp daughter 30S using proton-proton angular correlations is presented and used to determine that the spin of the 5.2-MeV level is most likely 3+ with 4+ also possible. The half-life of 31Ar is found to be 15.1(3) ms. An improved analysis of the Fermi β strength including the β3p-decay mode gives a total measured branching ratio of 3.60…

Strong gamma-ray emission from neutron unbound states populated in beta-decay: Impact on (n,gamma) cross-section estimates

Total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy is used to measure accurately the intensity of gamma emission from neutron-unbound states populated in the β-decay of delayed-neutron emitters. From the comparison of this intensity with the intensity of neutron emission one can deduce information on the (n,γ) cross section for unstable neutron-rich nuclei of interest in r process abundance calculations. A surprisingly large gamma branching was observed for a number of isotopes. The results are compared with Hauser-Feshbach calculations and discussed.

TAGS measurements of ¹⁰⁰Nb ground and isomeric states and 140¹⁴⁰Cs for neutrino physics with the new DTAS detector

In this work we report on total absorption γ-ray spectroscopy measurements of the β decay of fission products that are important contributors to the antineutrino spectrum. The experiment was performed at IGISOL as a part of a campaign of measurements with the new DTAS spectrometer. Preliminary results of the analysis of the β decay of ¹⁰⁰Nb, ¹⁰⁰Nb and ¹⁴⁰Cs are presented.

Shapes of Pb-192,Pb-190 ground states from beta-decay studies using the total-absorption technique

The beta decay of Pb-192,Pb-190 has been studied using the total absorption technique at the ISOLDE (CERN) facility. The beta-decay strength deduced from the measurements, combined with QRPA theoretical calculations, allow us to infer that the ground states of the Pb-192,Pb-190 isotopes are spherical. These results represent the first application of the shape determination method using the total absorption technique for heavy nuclei and in a region where there is considerable interest in nuclear shapes and shape effects.
