A new method to calculate external mechanical work using force-platform data in ecological situations in humans: Application to Parkinson's disease

Abstract Background and aim To accurately quantify the cost of physical activity and to evaluate the different components of energy expenditure in humans, it is necessary to evaluate external mechanical work ( W EXT ). Large platform systems surpass other currently used techniques. Here, we describe a calculation method for force-platforms to calculate long-term W EXT . Methods Each force-platform (2.46 × 1.60 m and 3.80 × 2.48 m) rests on 4 piezoelectric sensors. During long periods of recording, a drift in the speed of displacement of the center of mass (necessary to calculate W EXT ) is generated. To suppress this drift, wavelet decomposition is used to low-pass filter the source signal.…

Gustatory evoked cortical activity in humans in response to saccharin stimuli

National audience; Introduction/Objectives: Gustatory Evoked Potentials (GEP) can be detected in response to an intermittent stimulation of the gustatory receptors by a primary flavour. Contrary the other evoked cortical potentials (visual, auditory or sensory), GEP have not been extensively studied due to their recording heterogeneity. Our aim was to establish a reliable recording of GEP in Humans. Methods: Voluntary and healthy subjects were included in this experiment. A saccharin solution with several concentrations (5, 10 or 20g per 100mL) was used as the gustatory stimulus. Each session was performed on a different day, with an interval of at least 2 hours after eating or drinking. Co…

Pheromone-induced odor learning modifies Fos expression in the newborn rabbit brain.

Research report; International audience; Associative learning contributes crucially to adjust the behavior of neonates to the permanently changing environment. In the European rabbit, the mammary pheromone (MP) excreted in milk triggers sucking behavior in newborns, and additionally promotes very rapid learning of initially neutral odor cues. Such stimuli become then as active as the MP itself to elicit the orocephalic motor responses involved in suckling. In this context, the rabbit is an interesting model to address the question of brain circuits early engaged by learning and memory. Here, we evaluated the brain activation (olfactory bulb and central regions) induced in 4-day-old pups by …

Characterization of cholesterol metabolism in an experimental model of glaucoma in rats

International audience; Glaucoma is a neurodegenerative pathology characterized by retinal ganglion cell death. Cholesterol homeostasis disruption has been implicated in several neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer and Huntington. However, its specific role in the retina and association with glaucoma remain unclear. The aim of this study was to characterize the modifications of cholesterol metabolism occurring during an experimental model of glaucoma in rats. Eight-weeks old male rats were subjected to laser photocoagulation of episcleral veins, limbus and trabecular meshwork to elevate intraocular pressure. At a short (3 days) and a long (2 months) time period post-laser, the retin…

Brain processing of the mammary pheromone in newborn rabbits.

International audience; Chemosignals strongly contribute to social interactions in mammals, including mother-young relationships. In the European rabbit, a volatile compound emitted by lactating females in milk, the 2-methylbut-2-enal, has been isolated. Carrying the properties of a pheromone, in particular the spontaneous ability to release critical sucking-related movements in newborns, it has been called the mammary pheromone (MP). Lesion of the vomeronasal organ and preliminary 2-deoxyglucose data suggested that the MP could be processed by the main olfactory system. However, the neuronal substrate that sustains the MP-induced response of neonates remained unknown. Here, we evaluated Fo…
