The appreciation and application of useful knowledge is at the core of modern industrial culture. Emphasizing the role of practical skills and applied knowledge, this article analyses long-term patterns in the industrial history of the Agder region in Southern Norway from the 17th century to the present day. Focusing on five distinct periods, the article maps the emergence of significant new industries in the region and discusses how prominent industrial milieus in each period acquired the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in their respective fields.
