Varda's cinema is intimately a cinema of encounter: in each of them the filmmaker puts herself on the line and opens herself to the other; the encounter with the other is the high road to understanding and determining one's own identity. This contribution analyzes some of Varda's cinematic encounters with the aim of understanding the director's gaze.
