Root resorption caused by osteoma growth

introduction. Osteoma is a benign and asymptomatic neoplasm, consisting of well-differentiated mature bone. The solitary osteoma may be classified as: peripheral when arising from the periosteum, central when arising from the endosteum and extraskeletal when arising in soft tissue. The etiology of osteoma is still unclear. Some reported cas- es did have a clear history of trauma; however, this was not the case in the majority of cases. Whereas peripheral osteomas are fairly easy to diagnose, central osteomas pose a more challenging diagnostic problem and need to be differentiated from other similar lesions of the jaws, such as central ossifying fibroma, osteoblastoma, cementoblas- toma and …

TREATMENT OF CLASS I MALOCCLUSION WITH FRANKEL APPLIANCE

Aim. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of the Frankel in child with class I malocclusion, maxillary and mandibular contraction, and anterior teeth crowding. Materials and methods. 5 patients with a class I division I malocclusion, maxillary and mandibular contraction and anterior crowding was enrolled in the present study. All patients presented with a stage CS2, CS3 or CS4. Patients with CS5 were not enrolled in the study. Before wearing the Frankel, on each patient head radiographs were taken in lateral plane with the head fixed in a cephalostat with a filmfocus distance of 4 m and a midsagittal-to-film distance of 0,1 m. Cephalometric analysis and casts analysis was perform…

Oral squamous cell carcinoma as a complication of chronic graft-versus-host disease: a case report

Objectives. Chronic Graft-Versus-Host Disease (cGVHD) is an immunoregulatory disorder which occurs after allogeneic hematopoietic-cell transplantation (HCT) and often shares features of autoimmunity and immunodeficiency. GVHD related oral manifestations include severe oral pain, xerostemia, ulcerative lesions, and mucositis. Furthermore,a major late suggested complication of HSCT is the dramatically increased risk of secondary malignancies including oral cancer and oral cGVHD-releted inflammation may be considered a potential risk factor. Case report. A 51-year-old male patient referred in 1994 to our surgery for cGVHD oral lesions secondary to HCT for acute myelogenous leukemia developed i…

Occurrence of oro-facial malformations in a tertiary center hospital of Southern Italy: retrospective study on ten thousand newborns

Congenital anomalies (CA) are one of the major cause of infant mortality and childhood morbitity, affecting 2-3% of all babies. Approximately 1% of these newborns have syndromes or multiple anomalies; Cranio-facial anomalies are often a component part of these pathologies. Several newborns with cranio-facial anomalies are affected by syndromes composed of multiple malformations thought to be etiologically and/ or pathogenetically related. One of the most frequent sign of these syndromes is the cleft lip and/or cleft palate. It is estimated that 30% of cleft cases are syndromic and conversely, therefore, approximately 70% are non-syndromic. Oral clefts are among the most widely known and com…

Update on gingival overgrowth by cyclosporine A in renal transplants

Severe gingival overgrowth is one of the most frequent side effects in renal transplant patients associated with assumption of cyclosporine A. Several associations with age, sex, dosage, duration of therapy or interval since transplantation have been hypothesized. The introduction of alternative immunosuppressant drugs have been suggested to permit better long-term transplant outcomes and a decrease in incidence of gingival overgrowth. The aim of the present paper is to summarize current knowledge regarding aetiology, pathogenesis and management of gingival overgrowth induced by Cyclosporine A. El sobrecrecimiento gingival severo es uno de los efectos adversos más frecuentes en los paciente…
