[Non-invasive trans-cranial magnetic resonance imaging-guided focused ultrasounds surgery to treat neurologic disorders]

2016

In past years non-invasive clinical applications of magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound for t…

Native Mitral Valve Endocarditis Caused by Neisseria elongata subsp. nitroreducens in a Patient with Marfan Syndrome: First Case in Italy and Review …

2016

Neisseria elongata(NE) is an aerobic Gram-negative organism that constitutes part of the commensal human normal oropharyngeal flora. Although previously considered not to be pathogenic, it has been recognized as an occasional cause of significant infections in humans. We report here the first case in Italy of infective endocarditis of a native prolapsing mitral valve in a patient with Marfan syndrome, caused by NE subspeciesnitroreducenswhich has been rarely isolated from clinical specimens. The culprit organism has been confirmed by mass spectrometry directly from the positive blood culture, as previously reported. The amplified gene has been deposited in GenBank under accession number KT5…

Noncompaction of the Right Ventricle

2010

Noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium is a disease characterized by an increase of the ventricular trabecular meshwork caused by arrest of the normal endomyocardial morphogenesis (Figs. 1, 2, 3). In accordance with the normal human anatomy, the left ventricular wall is well compacted with a few thin trabeculae; on the contrary, the normal right ventricular wall is furrowed by many trabeculae (the trabecula of the marginal septum as well as other ones). For this reason, the term ‘‘noncompaction’’ usually refers to an exclusive or prevalent disease of the left ventricle [1–16]. Recently Song and Aragona et al. [1–3] reported two cases of isolated right-ventricular noncompaction. Accordi…

2016

Role of Densitometric Criteria in Evaluation of Effectiveness of Antiangiogenic Therapies in Metastatic Colorectal Cancer: An Italian Clinical Experi…

2017

Background/Aim: To evaluate the role of densitometric criterion using the Choi Criteria in the assessment of the response to antiangiogenic treatments of metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) compared to the RECIST criteria. Patients and Methods: Fifty-four patients (mean age=50.6 years ) affected by advanced colorectal cancer and with hepatic and possibly peritoneal and pulmonary metastases, that can be treated with bevacizumab, were prospectively evaluated by computerized tomography (CT) scan. Metastases were also evaluated by CT in onedimensional form according to RECIST. Results: Results show that in 58% of analyzed cases, stable disease according to RECIST coincided with stable disease a…

Physical capacity in performing daily activities is reduced in scleroderma patients with early lung involvement

2014

BACKGROUND: Patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc) often complain reduced capacity at submaximal exercise; conversely physical capacity in performing daily duties has never been measured in SSc. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate this performance and its correlates, in patients with SSc compared to healthy controls, in a free-living setting. METHODS: Twenty-seven outpatients with stable SSc and 11 controls were recruited. Physical activity was assessed by portable multiple sensor device (SenseWear Armband) worn for at least six days. Physical activity duration (PAD; in minutes) for non-sedentary activities and physical activity level (PAL= total daily energy/resting energy expenditure) per day were ca…
